Winds of God (1995 movie with music by Michiru Oshima)
Winds of God: Kamikaze (2006 TV re-make with music by Sojiro Nomura)
Based on a novel and very popular stage play, "Winds of God" tells the story of 2 struggling Japanese-American comedians who are killed in a traffic accident and whose spirits are transported back in time to Japan in 1945 where they materialize in the bodies of 2 Kamikaze pilots. Being from the future, both know how the war will end, but are torn between loyalties to both Japan and America. Will they decide to abandon what they know is a futile mission, or accept their fate and die hitting the deck of a US battleship?
In the 1995 feature film ("Winds of God") the story begins in Tokyo with the duo being killed in a car accident after losing an audition. For the 2006 TV movie re-make ("Winds of God: Kamikaze"), the action switched to the USA, with the duo living in NYC and being killed while riding motorcycles to a gig in Vegas.
Michiru Oshima composed the music for the 1995 movie, and Sojiro Nomura composed the music for the 2006 TV re-make. Both scores have a new-age, synth-y sound and feature the ocarina, with Nomura’s score sounding a bit more pop. Oshima is credited with arranging two of Nomura’s tunes (tracks 2 & 11). The story has always been marketed as a partial comedy, so the music is both serious and playful. In Oshima’s score, the loyalty of one character to America is reflected in the interpolation of “Battle Hymn of the Republic” on several tracks.
"Winds of God" (1995 feature film with music by Michiru Oshima): 16 tracks on VAP CD #VPCD-81099. Released in 1995.
"Winds of God: Kamikaze" (2006 TV movie with music by Sojiro Nomura): 15 tracks on Universal Music CD #UICZ-8012. Released in 2006.
