Stephen Foster’s Social Orchestra was various (published in 1854) instrumental arrangements of popular music suitable for parties and other social gatherings of the middle 19th. Century, including dance arrangements of Foster's own songs plus melodies of well-known operas and several new instrumental works composed by Foster. In 1976 Gregg Smith assembled a group of virtuoso players from various symphony orchestras and recorded the majority of the Social Orchestra pieces in their original arrangements using authentic instruments of Foster’s time. The recording was well received by critics and the public but has never been released on CD as of this writing. It was released on a reel to reel stereo tape by Columbia Record Club and it is one of these tapes that I DSD archived to produce the remastering in this download. The Stephen Foster Social Orchestra was prized by audiophiles for its excellent sound, among the best stereo recordings ever from Columbia Masterworks. In 1959 the Pittsburgh Symphony commissioned Robert Russell Bennett to compose a 4 movement symphonic work based on the songs of Pittsburgh native Stephen Foster. Stephen Collins Foster: A Commemoration Symphony was premiered by the Symphony conducted by William Steinberg and recorded by Everest Records in 35mm magnetic stereo. A DSD archived remix/remaster of this fantastic audiophile recording, sourced from a inch 3 track reel tape, is included in this download to bring this all Stephen Foster program to CD length. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Stephen Foster Social Orchestra (conducted by Gregg Smith) & Stephen Collins Foster: A Commemorative Symphony (arranged & Orchestrated by Robert Russell Bennett - Pittsburgh Symphony & Mendelssohn Choir conducted by William Steinberg)

Many thanks for this impressive re-release!

I'd love to see reposts of the Morton Gould World War I music and the Arthur Fiedler/BPO Concert in the Park...I collected both as LP's and have fond memories of them!
