I have closed a selection of threads and am considering closing more. I closed the ones I felt would not generate actual discussion or humour.

If anyone has any questions about this or input or arguments to make post them here.

EDIT

Don't mess around in this thread cause I'll just delete posts that aren't about discussing the topic here~

You can make any thread fun, at least.

The GC/JB/Vine Obsessions thread was really not even supposed to be posted. I was just screwed around, seeing how it would look, and since I was on my stupid iPhone, I remember zooming out, and the "Submit New Thread" button was accidentally pushed.

But, since a lot threads on a lot of different occasions took another road and turned into something completely different, I thought, "what's the worst that can happen?".

Because:

"Oh, I wonder what the weather is like where Penguin is, or where Clonemaster is?" - It's sort of interesting to see the different degree count and weather activity of where the users here live.
Considering some are or may be in Spain, France, Germany, Australia, or anywhere else. The weather patterns don't match and are not the same all across the world, you know.

There's no longevity in those kinds of threads other than spam/trying to get your post count up. Any if the information includes in those threads can be found in a simple Google search. In the terms of service that users "technically" agree with upon creating their accounts (which, generally, are worded pretty much the same way for most online communities) it is acknowledged that a member of the Staff can edit, or remove content for whatever reason(s) he/she sees fit, users aren't even allowed to question their reasons for doing so, in most cases.

EDIT:

From the registration page

The owners of Final Fantasy Shrine Forums reserve the right to remove, edit, move or close any content item for any reason.
This website/community has the merit of clearly defining owners, but really, other places usually go by Staff on that little bit. So, disclosing the reasons behind some of our actions as Staff is more of a courtesy on our part, we don't have to explain ourselves. Going by the general rules, an online community would be more like some kind of extended dictatorship.

Amanda
03-19-2016, 10:27 AM
Agreed. But certainly one mod can ask another mod for reasoning. Perhaps better by PM, but this is certainly not the first time one mod has openly questioned the actions of another. Usually a mass cleansing such as this comes at the behest of admin. Either way it is done. I have never understood why some members have disliked the rep thread so much. "it must be earned". Why? Who says? I could see if rep points meant anything at all but it does not. It is just a silly game to blow off steam. Obviously the forum is wound way, way too tight.....But hey, what do I know.

Leon Scott Kennedy
03-19-2016, 10:45 AM
Keyword being can. Personally, I never witnessed elsewhere some of the stuff I've seen here (on both moderation+user-side), but hey, it is stated that this place is rather lax. Speaking from experience, when someone earned a position in the Staff group, that person was trusted to make the "right" decisions, I suppose you could say the administation(s) didn't care, but that's the privilege you have when you own the place: you get to make (and enforce) your own rules, regardless of how stupid they might be. The moderator is an asshole? Who goddamn cares? Users' problem, they either deal with it, or get the fuck off (that's what it rightfully feels like in most communities).

My previous post was to be taken more as a reminder: folks don't realize just how great they have it on the Shrine. The What are you doing/listening/watching/give reputation threads? Those "+1/flood~dens" would have been deleted the moments they got submitted elsewhere; care about that stuff? How about getting an account on the likes of last.fm/Twitter/Facebook, two of them are social networks meant also for meaningless status updates which no one really gives a fuck about.
Or again, want to discuss (or praise) a certain soundtrack/series/movie/etcetera? How about setting up a thread down at General Media Discussion (http://forums.ffshrine.org/forumdisplay.php?f=62)? A small reorganization seems to be taking place, that is all.

Most of the threads that Penguin recently closed were rather... meh... at best. The reputation thread was just harmless fun. Hell, I know that if a thread like that (or one of the many others in GD) were posted on some other forums, they'd be closed and the poster would be temp banned if they were lucky! One forum I went to actually banned/deleted accounts of those who necro'd dead threads.

I'm not telling other moderators etc what to do in the subforum they are in charge of... all I'm asking for is a simple reason as to why one thread, which was harmless, was closed along with a plethora of those which quite frankly, were nonsensical.

Me, I don't want anything, actually. I still stand by the opinion that those threads are trash geared toward increasing the number of one's posts, but they have been around for a while, time through which, as it is my understanding, admins have been active, so they could have closed 'em, if they weren't okay.

As far as Staff-meetings are concerned, well… I don't know if I'm missing those things because they're held somewhere else (which would be a very stupid thing to do), but ever since I became a moderator, I've been left to my own devices, pretty much; I close/delete threads+posts without notifying co-workers about it, there have been a few instances when I got in touch with Jessie, prior to doing something, but most of my actions are completely of my own making. Come on, we all know the amount of time gone by is irrelevant. Hypothetical scenario: the administration decides to have stricter rules, thus, the kind of thread which was allowed yesterday is no longer fine today.

so why close the Thread when its just a Cesspool of funny Pictures and Spam

I hate being right. ManRay, what is happening here is precisely the reason why I used to point out, even when I was a user, that the forums would have benefited from an overhaul of the general rules and the moderation using more of an iron fist in their enforcement: this place is so unused to seeing moderation that even the smallest, harmless acts of it can't help being questioned (should I remind a few of you of how the "Sparktank fiasco" started? Some of you assholes went batshit crazy over what were normal and legitimate acts of moderation. Sure, the man eventually "lost it," but you fine folks didn't help things).

What has happened is sudden? Yeah, but seriously speaking, it should have happened sooner. There was a time when General discussion wasn't flooded with "+1/flood-games crap".

Pointless Picture Postings - Post A Gif In The Gif Thread.
Rep - Rep Any Post In Any Other Thread, Everyone Does Anyway.
Pointless Spam - Most Other Threads In The G/D Area.

No Loss.

Just because you're on another one of your "Fuck everything, only pointless Crap" Moodswings,

Frankly, in my long, long history with a variety of fandoms and fan organizations, I have come to appreciate that above a certain, very small quantum limit, they tend to self destruct unless they are ruled with a gentle, but iron fist.

A decision is made you don't like? Sure, ask (politely) for a clarification. But those who run this or any other forum are not under any obligation to change their minds or even respond.
Your only power is, rightfully, the power of whether you wish to participate. You don't like it, there's the door. No one is forcing you to stay.
I'm not an admin or a mod, I have no power here at all, and I am completely fine with all of this.

yeah, but the entire front page is filled with inane "what are you (blank), what is the (blank), what did you (blank)" threads. those aren't really conducive to discussion and fun, which is what gd is about. you may enjoy spamming a thread with the time or gifs or with "random" things you find funny, but not everyone does and not everyone shares your sense of humor.

Every Forum i've been a Member of ever has had a "Spam your Ass off" Thread, and this is the first Instance i've seen where someone
takes Offense.
I can give you two answers to that question:

#1 = On a personal level, I would have deleted the whole lot. It's funny for me seeing you mention that this is the first time you witness someone taking offense, because for me the opposite is true: in the 12 years I've spent around forums, I haven't seen a single one, besides the Shrine, being like this. Threads consisting of lists/status updates/reputation-trading were frowned upon pretty much everywhere I went (and, no, having a huge pile of Green Jolly Rogers didn't give any benefit to the poster, nor access to "VIP" subforums, or the likes).

#2 = If I'd have been made a moderator of General Discussion, I would have left these threads open. Why? Because I'd take into account also what the administrators have done (or should I use haven't done, in this case?). If the administrators haven't bothered to do shit to them, why should I?

I was not disagreeing with Penguin's decision to close the rep thread (or any other thread per se). I was simply after some clarification, that's all. If I disagreed with it, I would've flat out stated as such...

In any event, I honestly don't care what the mods of other subforums close, leave open etc... I take care of the subforum I'm a moderator and if I close a thread/edit a post/etc... I leave a reason as to why I closed it. Granted for the threads deleted, users can't see the reason (only admin and other mods of that specific subforum can) but I at least do give a reason.

Now it feels like a teen, post-apocalyptic novel.
We run around the ruins waiting to see who get picked on next for being in an open field.
The darkness is our friend because it keeps us hidden from the real enemies out there.
It's sary to make the slightest noise in case someone or... some... thing hears you.

Hmmmm... I should revive my fanfiction thread with an update to parallel the delapitated happiness of shrine.
It will be far worse than Inside Out depression. Because it's mostly Terminator-inspired apocalypse (keeping with the SparkTech story arc).
