Just some things I've noticed but haven't brought up yet:

"Day of the Dead"'s second half is influenced by the 'depressing build up' stringed arrangements in P2 9m61AB 62 Abandon Ship - Jack's Demise
"Tuesday" seems to have been heavily influenced by P2 1m3 Jack in the Box

Lol ok you got me there. I did have a few select tracks from fury road to go with my running and Spikey Cars made the cut. I do enjoy some of what I hear in this BvS score so far. I guess i'll have to sit with it for a few days and see how I feel then.

I wasn't thrilled when I got it, despite it being how high-profile it is. I liked (and still listen to) MoS way more than this. Hopefully what's in the film is a different presentation, though.

I agree. Zimmer seems to be in auto pilot mode. There isn't much new Superman material to be heard. What's shocking is the omission of " What are you going to do when you are not saving the world?", which was the best theme for me from Man of Steel. That theme screamed Superman. The new Batman theme is too repetitive and goes nowhere. But I liked it's use in "Do You Bleed?"

Looks like Zimmer wrote just the Lex theme, rehashed MoS and handed Batman and rest of the stuff to Junkie.

DAKoftheOTA
03-12-2016, 06:58 AM
I kinda feel the same way. This may be the first Zimmer score I'm not really loving. The only MoS material present is Sent Here for A Reason and Hilda rvarsdttir's vocals from Goodbyes / Launch Preparation.

I was depressed when Zimmer announced Junkie XL as his co-composer on this one. I wanted to give it a shot but after listening to it, the score turned out just how I dreaded it to be. It's funny, because when MoS came out, I was fascinated by the percussion used and the soundscape that Zimmer had created. But today, it's ubiquity is just getting irritating for me thanks to Junkie.

This is one of the most brickwalled and compressed OSTs I've ever seen Zimmer allow to be released.... a shame. Musical themes are nice but overall the audio sounds like it was thrown in the garbage, jossled around in an extreme vortex, and then crapped out by an elephant on steroids.

The best track on this for me is Men Are Still Good, the rest is passable at best, but that track has the new Batman themes and I like them more than the Nolan era work - makes me excited for any new Batman films. Dunno, just reminds me of the Arkham games which is always a good thing. Trying not to get too hyped for this film, but I guess I am (shameless Batman fan).

But... Is it me, or this score really is one of the most disappointing soundtracks in recent YEARS? The stuff written by Zimmer is as good as ever. His Superman's theme is probably the most emotional music on this score (the choral version from This Is My World is great!), and new theme for Lex Luthor is out there - especially those Vivaldi-like variations for violin. Batman's theme is good. It positively feels like combination of Goldenthal's theme for the hero, Holst's Mars and Goldsmith soft writing for Alien. But you'll be able to enjoy those things only in a few tracks outside that magnificent final suite. Why?
Well, because more than 50% of this score is goddamn sound design. Very obnoxious sound-design of lowest registers. It's like it wasn't even a superhero movie but a feature length episode of Hannibal show. Most likely this atmospheric music will be a good mood setter and great in-movie experience, but the album feels like a great soundtrack for migraine. The action writing from Holkenborg is aggressive (as usual), but it's just plain faceless. You'll not be able to distinguish most of those percussion passages from Mad Max or Run All Night. The only really decent action track was leaked way before this - it was Is She With You? All the rest is just bleak, forgettable stinger-like mess.
But, once again, kudos to the uploader. Thanks to you, guy, I can abort my pre-order on iTunes. I don't want to pay my money for this garbage.

Of course the lovely rocklegend makes an appearance in the zimmer thread. It's interesting that you blame zimmer while not having listened to the score. To me it seems like Junkie XL did most of this score, so before barking at Zimmer, listen to the score and get the facts right and Junkie wrote scores before he met zimmer. I don't really like this score but I don't act like a 8 year old who wants everyone to know his/her opinion is the right one.

I like both Hans Zimmer and John Williams very much and I respect that everyone has their own opinion but what I don't respect is how you take very chance you get to say that Zimmer is bad. Grow up.

Well considering the movie is "mostly" a Batman movie (according to reports he gets a bit more screen time than Superman) I can't blame Zimmer if he seems a little disinterested and passes chunks of the score off to others like Junkie XL. He's done three Batman scores now and I can easily imagine him going "Not more Batman please" and having fun with the new characters (Lex and Wonder Woman). Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was very similar; mostly a rehash of the previous scores with very little new material (although the Blackbeard theme is one of my favourites). Who knows? THis could be very simialr to that movie's soundtrack; a poor representation of the music in the movie with the score sounding a lot better in the movie itself (Only 8 of the 18 tracks on the On Stranger Tides soundtrack were actually from the movie and not remixes/Rodrigo Y Gabriela tracks that never appeared in the film). We won't know until we all actually see the movie. Besides, I often find myself liking Zimmer scores more after I've seen the movie and knowing the context for themes/tracks which I find helps you understand what Zimmer is doing with the score a lot more.

Ive seen the movie and its a mess.... I hated it but I also hated Man Of Steel.... once again these fuckers just dont get Superman.... this movie shouldve been called Batman V Batman as that wasnt fucking Superman up there on screen, its like he learned nothing from Man Of Steel.... Snyder is a fucking Hack

This is one of the most brickwalled and compressed OSTs I've ever seen Zimmer allow to be released.... a shame. Musical themes are nice but overall the audio sounds like it was thrown in the garbage, jossled around in an extreme vortex, and then crapped out by an elephant on steroids.

Don't despair, I'm guessing this is mainly a product of the path this version took to get to us. Same thing happened when Man of Steel first leaked. It sounded horrendous, but it was only because it had been compressed multiple times by different sharers before hitting the public. Granted brickwall compression is part and parcel of the Zimmer house sound, but I'm expecting the official release to not be anywhere near as sonically painful as this...thing. I'm thinking of it as a preview :)

thanks for the share. really having a hard time slogging through this. Usually enjoy Zimmer. Loved Interstellar. This... not so much. He sounds bored. Maybe one too many superhero scores for him? Shame his MoS theme is relegated to the back seat, because it really is a lovely theme. The new Batman theme, I don't care for. It's serviceable, but so derivative that it barely exists. To make matters worse, as was mentioned before, over-limiting has flattened all dynamic range out of the music. Perhaps with a better presentation, this could all come across better.

Having listened to it once (and its impossible to judge a Zimmer score on one listen), there are some nice cues here, some cliched heard it a million times cues.....and then there's Batman's theme, which is basically just Junkie XL doing a plodding rhythm of Zimmer "bwoaos". Worst Batman theme ever by far. Shame because I know Junkie XL has the musical chops to come up with something better than that.

TBH18
03-15-2016, 08:00 AM
Batman theme is just shit in my opinion, i can't believe Zimmer and Junkie didn't do anything better, also on the score there are just a few tracks that worth buying this (like "Is she with you?") But the rest are just boring and lame. The Red Capes Are Coming beginning sounds like Sherlock Homes soundtrack also done by Zimmer. A little bit dissapointing soundtrack.

Clemery76
03-15-2016, 08:54 AM
Thanks for the early sneak peak. Zimmer has so many soundtracks, that at this point, I'm happy if there is at least one solid suite I can make to add to a long playlist.

Sad but true... I remember back in the 90's I looked forward to seeing how new Zimmer albums would compare to my faves... now I am lucky if a single track from any of his modern scores make it to my custom compilation. Its like the guy has just ran out of music.

Hopefully theyve all gone or realized after listening to that masterpiece by John Williams they have now discovered that Zimmer is a hack fraud who has no idea on Film composition ;)

What masterpiece? The Force Awakens? Bwahahahahahahaha

Zimmer's work here is definitely a a dull listen, and while TFA at least includes a couple of new themes, they are also pretty uninteresting and unmemorable. In my mind, Williams stopped writing great music before Zimmer did.

Clemery76

What the hell does that even mean?

It means that his argument that Zimmer has been employing sound design in place of melodic music is a practice that goes back 20 years to The Thin Red Line. Pretty obvious I thought.

I would even argue that he has used sound design in place of score since his early days... there is plenty of evidence of it in Black Rain, even if the score as a whole features strong themes. Like I said above, I used to look forward to adding new Zimmer scores/albums to my memories, but these days I am just thankful if we get a single melodic track because his scores mostly seem filled with sound design as opposed to anything in the way of motifs or melody.

He apparently don't really want score this one, that's happen sometimes (remember POTC 4). There some good cues, but Funkie XXX is in the place.

Rey's theme is certainly 'better' than anything I have heard in this BvS release, sure... but it is hardly (IMO) as melodic or memorable as, say, Across The Stars from Attack Of The Clones. And the Kylo Ren theme, while having potential to be developed more, is just nothing compared to the Imperial March or Dual Of The Fates. It was the start of this century when I finally realised that I just wasn't finding his (JW's) music interesting or enjoyable anymore. There obviously have been some nice tracks along the way, but never anything as noteworthy from his glory years (70's-90's).

Same here... seeing Black Rain in the cinema as a teenager is where I first fell in love with Zimmer's music, and have been a long time fan since. His earlier works relied mostly on his themes... but scores like MoS and TDK rely mostly on the sound, and that is why I am finding less satisfaction with Zimmer these days. BvS is just the latest example, however I appreciate your comments above that he didn't really want to be involved with this score.

I'm agree he will never composed of as strong themes like this glorious period, Superman, ET, Indiana Jones, Star Wars.
he's change thy way of composing since A.I (Intelligence Artificial) on somethings less immediatly powerful
but he still the best in activity for now. War Horse or Tintin was good. I hope he's back on Episode 8 but if he can't or don't want (or die :(
) the only way is Giacchino.

(and not Junkie XL) (i'm kiding)

I totally agree that TFA doesn't have that instant-powerful score and this is a pity. But I have to admit that, after countless listening to OST and FYC, I learned to love this score, not all of it, but most.

I was also wondering if the two-year production may have affected negatively the composing process. The recording sessions took sort of five monthes, and started on June. Maybe when he was composing, the movie was still in editing room, so Williams's music had to be really "flexible" for the scoring mixing.
For example, look at the first minute of this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjNfOhbzxfI. This is what was supposed to be the very first notes after the Main Title. In the final movie it's totally different.
This is why I think this movie's score, especcially the longest and complex cues, was mostly a Scoring Mixing process. For the other movies, I think Williams began to write music with a first cut of the movie and plenty of time. So he could write the most complex cues without problems. For TFA he couldn't. Just compare the OST and FYC versions of "Attack on the Jakku Village" and "I Can Fly Anything" there are plenty of edits in each version, they're not just alternate versions.
This is why I believe Williams composed countless short cues, later mixed to "built" the some longer cues.

Maybe he'll be more comfortable for Ep. VIII, having already composed the new themes and thus less "new work" to do.

EDIT: I've just listened to an interview to Williams (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQ4jZr1w0AI). Actually, he never write music looking at the script of scenes. So, I have none idea what happened to the composing process, but I still believe his music has heavily mixed and he was "less free" than on the other SW movies.
Also, the entire TFA movie has various inner issues due to rythm and editing. They wanted at any cost a fast-paced movie, so they just needed to cut cut cut and edit edit edit. Both scenes and music...

In regards to Zimmer, I'll say that, as of late, he has firmly been in a rut. We had a brief glimpse of true innovation with the score to Interstellar back in 2014, but even that was heavily indebted to Philip Glass' work (the organ loops especially invoke a sort of hyped up, melodramatic Koyaanisqatsi), and so I do feel that, whatever innovation or ingenuity Zimmer had died quite awhile ago.

And while the score to The Force Awakens might be lacking an "Imperial March" or "Duel of the Fates", Williams is still incredibly good at creating a broad musical fabric, and one that has a lot of room to expand and grow, fleshing out themes and building on them. "Rey's Theme" in particular I can see becoming more expansive and intricate with subsequent films. I'm really looking forward to see what Alexandre Desplat will do with Star Wars: Rogue One, which is due out this December.

Then I understand why I didn't understand this post. Since when is "The Thin Red Line" considered as sound design?
Zimmer has had plenty of melody-driven scores, like Pearl Harbor, Gladiator, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Lion King, The Last Samurai or King Arthur, just to name a few. His love for sound design is quite recent.

listen to the first 1 minute and 20 seconds of it. Now I'm a huge hans zimmer fan, but when you have to accept simmers music after hearing this..........

Wow, well it's really a copy paste job they did of the batman theme there...

It's more inspired by Elliot Goldenthal's theme, in my opinion. It actually sounds like a combination of Elliot Goldenthal's and Danny Elfman's themes.

Just wanted to chime in and thank the op for sharing. I got this back on Sunday but haven't had the chance to comment on it until now. Overall, while it is disappointing that the score didn't love up to the hype, and lacks truly memorable track like MoS' "Terraforming", it's still an enjoyable score. I concur, though, that it seems like Zimmer's glory days are behind him. While he can come up with an interesting theme or two per movie, he always regurgitates said theme over and over again for almost the entirety of the score. Maybe he's bored or just doesn't have the drive anymore.

Beautiful Lie, Their War Here, Is She With You?, This Is My World and Men Are Still Good are all stand-outs, but I'm frankly surprised by how many ambient cues there are. Maybe they should've brought in James Newton Howard again to mix things up. Batman Begins is still clearly the best of Zimmer's Batman scores, and one my favorite he's ever done.

The only glaring cut-and-paste job I can remember from Zimmer was Davy Jones organ theme, which was almost exactly taken from a theme he did for "The Thin Red Line."

His use of 'sound design' in is scores goes al the way back to Black Rain in 1989 for me (probably even some of his earlier works, but haven't heard a lot of his pre-'88 work), and there were many tracks in The Thin Red Line that were arguably sound design moreso than melodic music. This style has always been part of Zimmer's work to a degree... it is only recently where he has seemed to abandon melodic music completely.

Thank you.

Have not listened yet,... will do now.

I wonder if it is "Music better than the movie",...like last time. Man of Steel was first time I'd heard music first....all that inspiring stuff....only to be like..."WTF IS THIS MOVIE,..!?.Did he score this to a different movie !!!?". LOL

Boy !! What a SHIT FEST of a movie....! Like,...oh ! I'm beginning to find some sort of coherence to this scene "SKIP" >>> oh ! I'm beginning to find some sort of coherence to this scene "SKIP" >>> wtf is going on...and why don't I care at all...? Why is superman a sociopath dullard unaware of "kindness"....and his Mom ain't hot in this one.

Thank you Monkey.
I am going to try this and see if its worth my money. its on sale in my local store, so I am wondering about it. Wanna listen here first and decide if I buy it or not.
Thanks once a again

edit:
feck.... the song with the title of the most stupid line of the movie is the reason I will buy. "Is She With You"
but honestly, the whole album is better then I expected. at least as a listening experience.
