Acknowledged all over the world for its activity in the field of film soundtracks, Cinevox Record is, in fact, fundamental for the history of music as a whole. Cinevox catalogue includes works by some of the most important composers ever, which are cult for collectors and milestones in different music genres, ranging from beat to lounge, from jazz to prog rock.

Cinevox was created in the mid-60's by Cesare Andrea Bixio, composer, author of the soundtrack for the first Italian talking picture and founder of Gruppo Editoriale Bixio. Bixio was able to get together several talented authors, representing the renewal of the Italian music, such as Ennio Morricone, Piero Piccioni, Giorgio Gaslini and many more. Those artists contributed to build a huge catalogue, distributed and appreciated all over the world.

Cinevox first LP, issued in 1966, was the soundtrack of “Poppy is also a flower”, featuring music by George Auric. During the 70s, the label released some of the most beautiful soundtrack ever.
We can mention , as examples, masterpieces like “Gi la testa”, “Indagine su un cittadino al di sopra di ogni sospetto”, “Metti una sera a cena” (Morricone). Jazz had always an important role in Cinevox repertoire, as shown by compositions like “La notte” by Giorgio Gaslini and “Adua e le compagne” by Piero Piccioni.

Cinevox brand is also strongly connected with Horror and Thriller cinema. It produced music for some movies by Mario Bava, Lucio Fulci and the Italian master of Horror, Dario Argento. Besides “L’uccello dalle piume di Cristallo” and “Quattro mosche di velluto grigio”, both by Ennio Morricone, it’s impossible not to remember the contribution of The Goblin. The Italian legendary rock band composed music for a lot of Argento’s movies, such as “Suspiria”, “Phenomena” “Tenebre” and , in 2001, “Non ho sonno”.

The collaboration between The Goblin and Giorgio Gaslini brought to the composition of “Profondo Rosso” soundtrack, with its immortal main theme. Along with the above, many other artists have recorded with Cinevox: from Keith Emerson to Bill Wyman, from Trovajoli to Umiliani, Piovani, Rota, Carpi, Cipriani, Ortolani, Rustichelli, Lurie.

There are few Italian record labels with as rich a history as Cinevox. Since much of its reissue output has revolved around the Goblin and Ennio Morricone catalogs it may be easy to forget that other labels such as Crippled Dick Hot Wax, Easy Tempo and CAM have drawn significantly from the Cinevox catalog. Listening to this 4-CD 55-track compilation should provide convincing evidence of the label's range.

Speaking of range, each of the four discs covers a genre: horror, comedy, police movies and westerns. Some of the tracks have appeared on Cinevox's soundtrack reissues and others have appeared on compilations put out by labels. Other tracks make what is surely a first appearance on CD, which makes this box highly desirable for fans of hard-to-find Italian scores. While Morricone and Goblin make requisite appearances, but the box also features work by Francesco De Masi, Riz Ortolani, Gianni Ferrio, Piero Umiliani, Angelo Francesco Lavagnino, Gianfranco Di Stefano, Carlo Rustichelli, Pino Donaggio, Augusto Martelli, Bixio-Frizzi-Tempera -- and that's just the Western CD. Other featured composers include Piero Piccioni, Nino Rota, Evan Lurie, Nicola Piovani, Stelvio Cipriani, Libra and more.

If you ever wondered what to get from the Cinevox catalog, it makes sense to start here. Considering the diverse talent and multiple moods, Cinevox: The History of Soundtracks is an essential collection. (not my review - reviewer unknown)
