Being partial to loving the sound of the original 1977-1983 masters, I really love the remastering you've
done on this score. It's like reliving the original trilogy in an entirely new way. I can't quite put my finger on it.
But I freaking love it. (Maybe it was intended, maybe it was not, but these definitely sound like ancient recordings now)

The Logic II Stereo version has a lot of noticable differences in mastering.
It is a lot more tame, muddy sort-of which makes it more concurrent to the original.
To me it is the opposite of the DTS version. The DTS is very in-your-face and loud.
The Logic II is very reverby, as if it were recorded in a giant hall. Muddy and easier on the ears (but still sports a harsh treble) but at the same time, the center sounds more centered, almost mono if you will. If that makes sense. The center panned audio sounds like it's really far away. Both versions still sound like older recordings. The DTS sports more of the original feel, much like the Special Edition for ANH. I actually prefer the DTS version. Sounds more organic to me.

than the original releases, slightly crisper, slightly more range between low and high volume, anyway I hope they're enjoyable.

The thing is, the other regular DTS release works fine, the 44.1 one with the DTS.wav files, but the 96/24 won't play (the .DTS only files). This I don't get. Hence my question regarding any necessary converting...
Spectre8750
01-04-2016, 08:12 PM
You might change the extension to .WAV. Can you play AC3 files? Would that help any? What are you playing them with?
franakin
01-04-2016, 08:50 PM
Changing to .wav didn't help. What I don't get is that the other DTS regular release plays just fine on my cd player (through hard drive via USB), but the 96/24, in.DTS (when other 96/24 medias work like a charm) definitely won't.
I thank you again for trying to resolve this issue, changing to AC3 won' t be necessary as my receiver and player both handle DTS very well...
Damn,I already love the regular release, but so wanted to hear the 96/24 version you did ....

I downloaded the 24-bit 96 kHz DTS files, but was then able to use TAudioConverter (
http://taudioconverter.sourceforge.net/) a legally free program, to convert the DTS files into 5.1 FLAC files at 24-bit 48 kHz. It was a shame they dropped from 96 to 48 kHz, of course, but they still sound great. WinAmp Pro plays them on my surround sound system with no problem.

The redbook standard used when writing an audio CD as distinct from a data CD has less error-correction overhead and accordingly can store more data. 80 minutes of raw audio at 1411kbps actually consumes about 850mb.
You can burn it as an audio CD - but if you want to copy the files onto a data CD, you're outta luck.

TAudioConverter can also convert them into a large variety of other formats as well, including m4a and ape among others.
(On an aside, maybe, based on some comments here by others, they didn't "drop" to 48 kHz, but were simply sampled at that rate from the beginning.)
---------- Post added at 06:52 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:46 PM ----------
One caveat about TAudioConverter, however, that I should have mentioned: Before you try the conversion process, go into the program's settings (located at the upper right of the program's window), then click the "Encoding" tab on the resultant popup box, and then UNcheck "Create folder structure in output". Otherwise you might run into some problems with file/folder names being over the 256-character limit.

The 24/96 are true 96khz. Check the Frequency Spectrum Graph in the main post.
bobtheknob
01-11-2016, 02:37 AM
Well, I might be an idiot (it certainly wouldn't be the first time, just ask my ex-wife), but the graph appears to me to be entirely below 50,000 Hz. You're talking about the second, more colorful one, right? And then, on the right-hand side of both channels, where the numbers go up in 5000 increments, and both channels appear to stop just above 45,000 Hz?
Now, if I'm simply reading it wrong, then I will certainly apologize most humbly and happily accept the correction.
http://i1243.photobucket.com/albums/gg548/dsphipps100/nod.gif
I'm certainly not getting worked up about it anyway, I mean, isn't the threshold of human hearing ca. 50 kHz anyway? So it would be pretty tough for somebody to really notice that much difference at 96 kHz anyway. Either way, the music certainly sounds great the way you've got it.

Spectre8750
01-11-2016, 02:45 AM
24bit~96khz divided into two channels = 48khz per channel. Now depending on the Track, and the Frequency at certain amplitudes the Graph will show various amounts of Color (Frequency) on the Graph.
But the Graph shows that it's higher then a 48khz which would equal 24khz per channel.

Also as far as the mix and sound, I like to hear the orchestra spread from left to right, not half jammed left and the other jammed to the right. It sounds more natural. And the Bass is really mixed so you can adjust it a tad up. Some don't like a lot of Bass. The Mid Range is just a tad high for the hard of hearing and can be EQ'd down a little as was the common practice back in the Day. Also I don't like too much Hard Limiting or Brick Walling.
