MRKELEG aka BACKSTABBED, featuring music composed & performed by Alan Howarth (THE LOST EMPIRE, HEADLESS) for the 1996 Danish horror film directed by Martin Schmidt, written by Dennis Jrgensen and starring Line Kruse, Christian Grnvall, Mari-Anne Jespersen and Karl Bille.
MRKELEG aka BACKSTABBED tells the story of four high school friends who gather in an abandoned house to play Backstabbed, a childhood game of murder where they stalk and pretend to kill each other with plastic knives. Unknown to them, a real killer has followed them to the house and it soon becomes apparent that the four friends are no longer playing a game of make-believe and their lives are at stake.
Drawn to the musical style used in the films of John Carpenter, the director, Martin Schmidt, chose to employ Alan Howarth to compose a score similar in tone and structure to his collaborations with Carpenter. For MRKELEG aka BACKSTABBED, Howarth set out to create a score that would capture the essence of the film, making choices that would give the score a more European flavor. Composed primarily on the Synclavier, Howarth selected the dulcimer as the lead stringed instrument for recurring themes. The score also contains the composers trademark haunting synth textures and sampled percussion.
Alan Howarth, in addition to being a composer, is an accomplished sound designer and editor, having worked on films such as STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE, POLTERGEIST, TOTAL RECALL, ARMY OF DARKNESS, BRAM STOKERS DRACULA, STARGATE and many others. He has been a frequent music collaborator with John Carpenter on his films beginning with ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK in 1980 and including HALLOWEEN II & III, CHRISTINE, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, THEY LIVE and PRINCE OF DARKNESS and Alan has scored many films on his own, including THE LOST EMPIRE, RETRIBUTION, HALLOWEEN 4 & 5, THE DENTIST, HEADLESS, BOO! and, most recently, EVILUTION and BASEMENT JACK.
