Among the many martial arts movies I watched and enjoyed when I was growing up, the first two Best of the best movies have a very special place. Eric Roberts was great as the hero and I especially got very emotional during the first movie. The second one I remember most because of the music. We are in The expendables month and I am reviewing Best of the best 2.

This score, written by David Michael Frank, is all about the main theme. If there ever was a symbolic theme for action / martial arts movies, I would put this one right on top alongside the Rocky theme. David Michael Frank wrote one of the catchiest, most inspirational and most durable cues from the late 80s and early 90. This one is on par with TV show themes, thats how infectious it is to me. I hum it and remember it as much as I do the themes from MacGyver or KITT or Miami Vice, which Ive heard dozens of more times. This theme is perfectly simple and nails every single feeling I should get from a cue like this: I am inspired, I am motivated, I feel strong and theres also a note of tenderness keeping my feet on the ground. The track is the perfect hero: loving, powerful, determined, and capable of coming back from anything to win. I cant stop playing it. I feel like it should be on the opening and closing credits of every movie of its genre. Theres nothing epic about this track, its just heart. I think this is the best way to describe the main theme from Best of the best 2.

The rest of the score is very enjoyable as well. I usually dont stop just at the main theme; I listen to the entire score. Its never pretentious, never overly dramatic and never pathetic. Its a perfect score for a martial arts movie, one of the best ever actually, and the nostalgia level is very high with this one.
