Laurie Johnson’s JASON KING is a terrific companion piece to his other TV scores, a colourful cross-section of groovy beats, jangling suspense, sly romance, and exciting action. The Network 2-CD set presents us with all the surviving music, in mono. If you like his music for The Avengers, The New Avengers and The Professionals, then this is definitely for you.

I’ve bought nearly all the Network soundtrack releases, and I’m really happy they’re getting all this wonderful music out there, but I do have one quibble: the Network guys seem to approach these releases more from an archivist’s point of view, and not from the perspective of someone sitting in their living room and actually listening to the music. Everything is just bunged onto the CDs with no attempt to correct any flaws. The overall volume levels are often wildly inconsistent - some tracks are far too quiet, others are so loud they’re brickwalled/clipped. And no attempt is made to give the tracks proper titles.

I decided to rectify all of that with JASON KING. I’ve EQ’d the volume, fixed the clipping, combined some of the short tracks, jettisoned just under a minute of repetitive not-very-alternate alternates, and rearranged the whole shebang into what I hope is a superior program of music. And I’ve given the tracks proper titles that reflect how the music sounds. (In general, the cues are not episode specific, they were composed as “library” pieces to be tracked into scenes where needed).

There’s some deliberately cheesy source music featuring organ (Hammond?) which doesn’t really blend with the rest of the score, so I’ve relegated these cues to the end as bonus tracks.
