Over 300 000 cinemagoers have now seen PINA, and from the start there were continual enquiries from delighted viewers about the music and the soundtrack. Most of the pieces of music featured in the film come straight from Tanztheater Wuppertal productions, but the score is enriched by original pieces composed for the film by the Berlin musician Thom Hanreich.
Wim Wenders� love of music is often reflected in his films. Here too there is much fine music to be heard � which was inevitable given that its subject was Pina Bausch�s dance theatre. Wenders has said that music was certainly one of the reasons he felt drawn to Pina Bausch�s pieces and now feels so �at home� with them.
The soundtrack offers a cross-section of the musical diversity heard in the film PINA. Artists represented on the compilation include Jun Miyake, Hazmat Modine, the New World Renaissance Band, Henry Purcell, Germano Rocha, Ren� Aubry, Cujo and Thom Hanreich. It brings together a variety of styles, making many hitherto unknown artists and tracks available to a wider public.
The soundtrack will undoubtedly reawaken memories of the powerful images from the film for all cinemagoers. Wim Wenders emphasises that the music Pina Bausch used consistently expressed �longing�. He noted that their musical tastes were similar in that respect: whether blues, fado, Latin, or even pop, the sense of longing predominates.
