"You used up all the glue, on purpose!"

"Aunt Clara had for years labored under the delusion that I was not only
perpetually 4 years old, but also a girl!"

SYNOPSIS

OK, so in case you've never seen "A Christmas Story", let's see if this jogs your memory.
The story of one boy's dream of getting an Official "Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle" for Christmas. "A Christmas Story" was not recognized as a classic until it had run on television for several years. Now it is a Christmas tradition for many, and runs on cable television in a 24-hour marathon on Christmas Day.

Based on Jean Shepherd's book "In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash", "A Christmas Story" is built
out of dozens of personal anecdotes from Shepherd's boyhood memories of his family's Christmases in the 1940s.
The film is loaded with the memorable one-liners:
- You'll shoot your eye out!
- Oh, fudge!
- Be sure to drink more Ovaltine.
- I triple dog dare ya!
- Fra-gee-lay: it must be Italian.
- Scut Farkus!
- You used up all the glue on purpose!
- You look like a deranged Easter bunny.

As funny as the film is, what really makes "A Christmas Story" a classic is its emphasis on the warmth
and love of one poor family struggling to make it through yet another Christmas.
Melinda Dillon and Darren McGavin are perfect as "Mrs. Parker" and "The Old Man" (no first names are given), parents to young Ralphie and his little brother Randy.

McGavin gives one of his best performances as the father, whose life is built on little triumphs such as
haggling for Christmas trees, avoiding attacks by the neighbors dogs or successfully changing a tire in
under four minutes. Perhaps the most memorable image in the film is the lamp shaped like a woman's leg, a "major award" from one of the father's puzzle contests.

Although the lamp is ghastly looking, The Old Man's pride in actually winning something blinds him to its
putridness as he proudly displays it in the front window, to the horror of his wife.

ABOUT THIS SOUNDTRACK v2

Thirty+ years have come and gone since the release of "A Christmas Story".
People who have seen the beloved classic no doubtably wished for a complete soundtrack.

A few years ago, Rhino released a number of tracks, thrown together hap-hazzardly and called it a soundtrack.
Of course anyone who listened to that album quickly noticed a number of things.
First off, all of the 1940's era music was omitted.
Second, none of the tracks matched the sequence of the film.
And lastly, each "track" contained clips or bars of music together that were unrelated, forming a mish-mosh.

Now, building a second soundtrack proved to be no easy task.
Listening to the music behind the scenes, usually played on a radio or hidden in the background was
one thing; identifying them is another.
We have Classics, 1940's tunes, Movie Themes, the Original Score and of course Christmas music.

Many of the 1940's "era" tracks such as Sammy Kaye and Sterling Young were difficult to find.
Even more difficult were the "marching band" tunes.
All of the marching band music was played by the Ohio Salvation Army Band.
I was able to locate studio versions of all of their songs but with one peculularity.
In the film, the music seemed to be played in 6/4's time (sped up).
With a little tweeking, I enhanced the studio copies to match the pitch and speed.
So, while these are not the exact tracks from the film, they are recreations at least played by the
correct artist.

The track "Soap Poisoning" (Hearts and Flowers) was originally composed by Alphons Czibulka in 1891 as part of Wintermrchen Waltzes Op.366.
The original (violin) recording didn't exactly match the tone of the film.
However I did find a copy by the J.H. Squire Celest Octet which sounds really close.

After analyzing the score recorded by Paul Zaza & Carl Zittrer, I noticed that in most of their tracks,
they used a series of overlays, retracking multiple cues and bars to form each song.
"I Triple Dog Dare Ya" is a perfect example where no less than 10 parts were combined together.
All of the score tracks I dissected and remixed to exactly match the music used in the film.
Even the length of the closing theme "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" now matches the film.

On another note, the copy of "The Bumpus Theme (Chicken Reel)" still contains the annoying (dog) fx
mixed into the original soundtrack; not much can be done about that.

So, is this soundtrack complete?
I would love to say it is, but there are still two tracks entitled "22 What I Want For Christmas (talking)" and "41 A Crummy Commercial (talking)" that I have not been able to locate all of the music.
I've included them here for continuity sake,
Who knows? Maybe in another thirty years they will release the missing tracks.

But all-in-all I think you will find this version closely matches the film in every respect.
I hope you enjoy it.
Merry Christmas!

ADDITIONAL FACTS ABOUT THE MUSIC

Director Bob Clark stated in the film's DVD commentary that he and author Shepherd wished for the movie to be seen as "amorphously late 30s, early 40s". A specific year is never mentioned;

The mock heroic tone of the narration, filled with such hyperbole as "the legendary battle of the lamp",
is matched by the extensive use of familiar classical music themes.

The title card and closing credits are accompanied by modified instrumental versions of "Deck the Halls" and "We Wish You a Merry Christmas," respectively by Paul Zaza & Carl Zittrer.

Ohio Salvation Army Band Supervised by Anita Hunt performed
"Jingle Bells" (in Opening Scene in front of Higbees Department)

The Holy Trinity Baptist Church Ensamble Supervised by Phyllis Payden sang
"Go Tell It on the Mountain" (as carolers during the opening scene)

Popular music of the time was also used, ostensibly heard on the radio (a 1940 Westinghouse 780 5-Band Console) in the Parker's home:

- Three Christmas songs sung by Bing Crosby in conjunction with the Andrews Sisters:
"Jingle Bells"
"Santa Claus is Comin' to Town"
"It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas"

- A recording of Sterling Young and his Orchestra.

- The breakfast scene features a version of The Hut-Sut Song used quite extensively by Sammy Kaye and his Orchestra.

When the character Scut Farkus appears, the Wolf's theme from Sergei Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf plays in the background ("Farkas" is a Hungarian name and literally means "wolf").
The leitmotifs from Peter and the Wolf are used quite extensively.

The piece that plays after Ralphie says "fudge" after the lamp breaks for the second time,
and after Ralphie breaks his glasses, is the opening of Hamlet by Peter Il'yich Tchaikovsky.

Some of the large pieces, such as On the Trail, were edited to pull the most recognizable parts.
The Grand Canyon Suite by Ferde Grof is featured prominently in the movie.
Movement 3 [On The Trail] provides a suitable Western feeling to a Red Ryder rifle fantasy sequence.
Bits of Movement 1 [Sunrise] and Movement 4 [Sunset] were also freely
arranged and adapted throughout the score.

Some of the music in the dream sequence with Ralphie in a cowboy outfit shooting at bandits and later when he finally plays with his BB gun outside of the house is based on the main theme from the classic John Ford western Stagecoach (1939).

During a dream sequence when Ralphie goes blind from soap poisoning, Alphons Czibulka's "Wintermrchen" can be heard.

The music when Ralph uses the Orphan Annie decoder is actually a stock music piece from the
Associated Production Music library called "Footsteps of Horror #11.2" by W. Merrick Farran.

The classroom fantasy scene where Mrs. Shields is grading Ralph's paper features two excerpts from
Peter Il'yich Tchaikovsky's "Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture."

Revere High School Band, Bandleader Deborah Schaefler and
Parma High School Band, Bandleader Jim Sentz
(walked in the Christmas Santa Claus Parade)

The Ohio Boys choir with Choirmaster Alexander Musichuk sang
"Deck The Halls" (during the Christmas Santa Claus Parade)

While waiting in line for Santa, the music in the background are parts of "Jingle Bells" by Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians from the "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" album on Decca Records.

Whenever the scene involves the hounds belonging to the Bumpus family "our hillbilly neighbors", snatches of the American folk tune "Chicken Reel" are heard.

The harp solo from Benjamin Britten's "Ceremony of Carols" is briefly excerpted for the scene in which Ralphie observes a snowy Christmas morning from his bedroom window,
which follows a segment of glockenspiel music which comes from the latter half of Movement 3 [On The Trail] of Ferde Grofe's Grand Canyon Suite which plays as Ralphie awakens on Christmas morning.

TRIVIA FUN FACTS

Jean Shepherd’s book “In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash”, which “A Christmas Story” is based on, is a collection of semi-autobiographical short stories that Shepherd wrote for “Playboy” magazine during the 1960s.

The character Scut Farkus, played by Zack Ward, was created specifically for the movie, and never appears in the book.
In the book, Grover Dill is the only bully who torments Ralphie. The setting for the movie was based on
Hammond, Indiana the home town of author Jean Shepherd. Shepherd grew up on Cleveland St and went to Warren G. Harding Elementary School. Just like Ralphie.

The movie was actually filmed in Cleveland, Ohio and Toronto, Ontario. The house from the movie is located just outside of downtown Cleveland and the Higbee building still stands in downtown Cleveland.
The Christmas tree shopping scene and many of the inside shots of the house, were filmed in Toronto, Ontario .
One of Toronto’s trademark red trolleys can be seen driving by the shot of the outside of the tree lot.
Ralphie’s school exteriors were filmed at Victoria School in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada.

To find an American city resembling an Indiana town of the 1940s, director Clark sent his location scouts to twenty cities before selecting Cleveland, Ohio, as the site for filming. The decision to film in Cleveland was due to the willingness of Higbee’s (an actual department store) to allow the movie to be filmed inside the store.

In addition to providing the voice-over narration, writer Jean Shepherd had a cameo appearance in the movie as a grouchy department store customer who tells Ralphie to go to the back of the Santa line.

Director Bob Clark has a brief cameo appearance as Swede, the Parker family’s dim-witted neighbor with a southern-accent who stops to marvel at the leg lamp from across the street.

For the scene in which Flick’s tongue sticks to the flagpole, a hidden suction tube was used to safely create the illusion that his tongue had frozen to the metal.

Author Jean Shepherd’s concept for the “major award” leg lamp was based on a real lamp: an illuminated Nehi logo.
The style of the leg lamp for A Christmas Story was created by production designer Reuben Freed who had never before seen or heard of a leg lamp. Three leg lamps were made for the movie and all were broken on set during the filming.

The Radio Orphan Annie decoder pin that Ralphie receives is the 1940 “Speedomatic” model, indicating that the movie takes place in December, 1940. Different decoder badges were made each year from 1935-1940. By 1941, the decoders were made of paper due to World War II metal shortages.

Some of the “snow” used during the scenes between the kids and the bullies was actually soap flakes and fire fighters foam. The stars later remarked that they were slipping and sliding during the filming of the scenes.

There was a deleted scene titled "Ming The Merciless" featuring Ralphie and Ming The Merciless and Flash Gordon. This was supposed to be another dream sequence of Ralphie's.
You'll notice in the closing credits that Ming The Merciless and Flash Gordon are listed as part of the cast.
This is a known blooper.
This elaborate fantasy sequence – in which Ralphie joins Flash Gordon to fight Ming the Merciless – was filmed but dropped from the final cut. A picture of this scene and the costumes used in it are on display at A Christmas Story House and Museum.

A Second fantasy sequence involving Blark Barts men was cut from the film in favor of the back yard fantasy sequence.
The deleted sequence involved Ralphie rescuing Santa from Black Bart’s men while Santa is stuck in a chimney.
Little brother Randy (in disguise) played one of Black Bart’s men in the scene.
His costume from the scene is on display at A Christmas Story House and Museum.
