I just tried to beat the one monster at the Chocobos place (the air garden). It's called "Yadis" in my game version. I have no idea what it's called in the English game version. But I hope everybody knows about what monster I'm talking about.
It lokks like a big coloured ball, and it has over 65000 HP and keeps attacking with the strongest magic.
How can I defeat it? I'm always dying, because this monster is quicker than me. All my characters are on haste already, but still too slow. :(
Can somebody help me?

That's Ozma! That's Final Fantasy IX's version of the "Weapons," the biggest, baddest monster in the game. Try looking for some threads marked Ozma, or try these tips which might help:
- Make sure that your characters aren't at levels that are multiples of five --- this sucker likes to use Level 5 Death.
- Have Auto-Life, Auto-Haste, etc. etc., pretty much any auto-status you can get
- You can't hit this sucker with physical attacks unless you've completed the friendly monsters sidequest. Specials are better anyway. Hit it with Dragon's Crest, Thievery, and as many Trances as you can --- try to get your chosen party as close to Trance as possible before the battle starts. If Steiner has Shock and Climhazzard, that's good too
- If it's really hitting you hard, then make sure to have at least one, maybe two healers
- Zidane can steal some great stuff from this sucker, if you can withstand the battle long enough
P.S.: Consider leveling up some. A low-level party can survive (I believe there's challenge things at GameFAQs about it) if you really know what you're doing, but ultimately if you really just want to beat this sucker, leveling up and gaining some more abilities and stuff is really gonna help.

Oh, that's Ozma? OK, thanks. I didn't know.
The bad thing about him is, he's too quick. I know how to hurt him, but my characters are not fast enough.
Auto-life is equipped, but it only helps once (didn't know about that, either).
And I have no idea if I completed the friendly monster sidequest. Nobody tells me, if it's done or not.
What level should be the best for killing him? I'm still a kid of low, think.
But ok, I'll search for the other threads about it. Thanks for your help. :)

If you went to the forest where the Yans are (they're another of the really tough monsters) and found a friendly Yan (and gave it a Diamond, I think), then you completed that quest.
What level should be the best for killing him?
Hmm, I think I may have been level 70 or higher. Like I said, I think it's possible to do it on lower levels, but it gets into that absurd challenge type thing.
How about this --- if he's just wiping out your characters with one hit on a regular basis and you simply can't retaliate, then you're probably at too low a level.

I think, I had one before that gave me a diamond. And I got 50 AP for it. But it wasn't the last monster I met.
Wasn't there one who gives you more than 50 AP? I thought, I had one before that gave me a lot more than 50 AP, but I can't remember very well. :(

I dunno. If you were playing the English version, I'd tell you that were done if you gave one a jewel and it told you something like "Now you can beat the round guy!"
But the truth is, physical attacks aren't really the best way to go with Ozma anyway, so you don't really need to complete the Friendly Monsters if you haven't. Let me ask you this --- does the game let you use physical, non-distance attacks against Ozma? If it does, then you completed Friendly Monsters. If not, then you haven't.

Yes, I remember I can do. I did one with Zidane before, but he was little, so his attack was very weak of course.....
I guess, I finished the friendly monster sidequest then.....but nobody had told me. And nobody told me about Ozma, either. :(

If you mean somebody in the game telling you, yeah, nobody will. It's all very subtle hints at best.

Hmm, did it say anything at all before it went away? Each friendly monster is supposed to say something after you give it the jewel it wants.

If I do them in a certain way, they will tell me something.
For example: If I beat monster A, it will tell me about monster B, B about C etc. If I beat monster B before I've beaten monster A, monster B won't say a word.
Actually, the most monsters didn't say a word. I think only two did...

Hmm. Well, I'm not sure what went wrong. In any case, you can use the physical attacks, so it would seem all is well on the Friendly Monsters front.

I don't know, but it's always been this way with the friendly monsters. Maybe this is something they messed up in my game version. But as long as I can do this quest, everything is fine. ;)

Ozma uses darkness attacks so equip an armour with 100% darkness protection i forget what it's called. this means you can attack with high level darkness magic too. Ragnorak and Ultima Weapon are almost a must.
Now the Friendly monster sidequest. DON'T attack them. Give them exactly what they are asking for! They will tell you who's next. If you don't run into the monster the last monster told you to say hi to then go back along the route across the world that the stroy went until you see them.

I beat Ozma by having Zidane, Vivi, Eiko, and Steiner all at Lv.99 and I built their Trance meters up so one attack would push them all into their Trances. Ozma didn't stand a chance against that!!
Aerith Gainsborough
12-28-2004, 09:39 PM
Well, if all my characters were on level 99 I wouldn't have problems, either. Once I came pretty far, but my characters were not even on lv. 70. I wasn't fast enough, so I lost.
I just decided to start a new game again, because I couldn't do the Chocobo quest anymore. I didn't want to level up until the end, just for beating Ozma. I'll level up more the next time.
And now, where I finished my game, my Zidane was only on level 73, Vivi only on 50 some.

You should meet each friendly animal in turn, each one will ask for an Item, if you give the Item it will say something along the lines of "Say hello to.... for me" what you win from the 'battle' is the next item on the list, you should eventually meet a cute looking sheep/goat thing called a Yan, be careful here though because the nasty versions have 20000 hp and can eliminate a character in one blow regardless of stats and armour :o
apart from that theres not much I can add really, only pray when you fight Ozma/Yadis, If it does a certain 'set' of spells on you (meteor followed by curse followed by Flare star), you probably won't stand a chance :(

FFinsider?! Our mortal enemy, we own them!
TBH, I never actually fought Ozma, it was optional, and I couldn't really be arsed with it.
I am sure everyones ideas will help you next time though, if not you know where to go!

I didn't like Ozma's design much either. Hey look I am fighting the weapons for a REASON. They kill people. Ozma is just some giant marble in the sky. I wish game designers had a bit mroe time to tie things together here.

Ozma will always attack before your characters because she automatically gets a turn when you input a command (in other words, she will attack you before you get a chance to attack her). To counter this, have a character attack, then input commands during Ozma's attack animation.
For example...
Freya attacks ozma
Ozma casts flarestar before Freya moves
Choose commands for other party members WHILST she casts flarestar
If Freya survives, she will attack
If others survive, they will perform actions and ozma will not counter
Note = I believe Ozma is a lady monster :)

That's what I did. I always like to steal all the stuff. But sometimes it just takes a little longer. And that means, if a battle takes a bit longer, you'll be able to see the whole power of the enemy. ;)
But Hades was still kinda easy though.
Even Ozma isn't that hard if you are on a higher level, and if you use the right magic (or attack). :)
