Is the site still under same ownership as it was 5 years ago/>? Also can someone recommend some free FTP server programs I can use with windows 10.. I'm bringing my ass and 450 GB of game music back into the scene... I can't think of a better place that is not filled with stuck up twats and assholes :)

I wasn't here 5 years ago but, Sarah is the site owner, she's not around much though.. A free FTP I've used before is https://filezilla-project.org/
Most people around here though use DepositFiles, MEGA, 1fichier, etc..

And honestly, in my three years tenure at this place, it has become considerably less filled with Twats and Assholes. But, having
said that, there's still a few around here who really like to grind my gears.

Would be nice to see more Video Game music around here, especially really old/really new stuff. I don't suppose you have a
gamerip of Halo 2 Anniversary? ;)

Unless you happen to have a rack server sitting somewhere attached to a 1gb internet connection... I would massively, massively recommend AGAINST operating an FTP server. One of two outcomes are possible:

a) Nobody uses it, meaning you wasted your time.
b) Everybody uses it, meaning it runs like a dog and your internet connection gets fucked up the arse until you ban everybody and close it down in desperation.

In addition, you will face whining from people who find your FTP slow and people who don't understand what FTP is and can't be bothered to find out.

That said... I echo Zaralyth's recommendation - most people use FileZilla because it's a splendid client, but it's a really, really fantastic server as well.

Torrents are great for movies and such like eztv and torrenting etc however I refuse to do that because seeders are almost impossible and I'm old school . With that said I used to run a gamealbums .com till I sold it and don't really use IRC any more. I co founded #gamemusic on DALnet seems like ages ago.. I just wanted a decent community to share my collection that I've been collecting since Sept of 1998 With that said this weekend I will put aside some time.

People who whine are ok with me, I actually enjoyed at one point really helping newbies getting into collecting game music, helping with FTP FAQ's.. something the other so called VG music sites were totally and complete assholes about... Elitists each and every one of em. As far as running an FTP I can deal really well with the Bandwidth... Its called having a 55 hour a week job and when I'm home I'll shut my server down... Its a regular 5 day a week, same shift ordeal so people will know the hours.

Now halo 2 anniversary no Just the Halo Anniversary sorry, oh and 4.. I used to have a list, now I can't find it.. Its a ton of music though as in over 450GB ( more if you count other music ) Ill be back this weekend.. its a 3 dayer for me

EDIT ADD: Dam its a Saturday night and its been so long... Found an ftp server but now to deal with the fact its a bitch setting these things up with having a router to deal with... I guess if I was the only one to have a computer and internet in my home I would just use straight IP address... Going to take a little time to figure this out

Well gff and gmp3s if you know either of those places are filled with asshats , elitists and pricks.. This place has always been kind.. On a side note its taking me a little longer than I like. I have to figure out how to set up an FTP with a router... things used to be much easier.. Its either that or talk Sarah into getting a DC++ hub up and going for ffshrine!! I told her I would help where I could...

Can you imagine a central area for people to just browse and download game music, all in the name of ffshrine and nice thing is there would be no in and out leaching as they would need to be there in order to download :) What do YOU think about that

IRC is still a primary mode of communication for me and I get most of my music via FTP servers. I am the internet equivalent of your grandpa.

I've been using FlashFXP since like 2000 and have no complaints for my purposes. I think I paid to register at some point but it was a more than worth-while investment.

FileZilla is easily the easiest way to set up an FTP server, I've done it years ago to share files from my computer for college and it was painless to get it up and running. By the way I for one would very much appreciate if you share your collection again, mostly because you have some soundtracks that aren't anywhere available not even for purchase, this of course given you still have the same collection: Final Fantasy Shrine Forums - This is a discussion forum powered by vBulletin. If any one knows I'm on WiFi and when I list my info do I list the router up or ? Never had to deal with one like this before.. And it's been awhile since I had an ftp set up... Thanks and one last thing I work m-f and only use my computer a couple hours in early morning for game ng... My ftp will be on the rest of the time.

Thank you a lot!

I haven't set up an FTP server for some time now so I don't know how much I can help you, but from what I can remember using FileZilla I just installed it, created the users, assigned the folder or folders, add a rule to the OS firewall and forward the port 21 in my router to the external world, my server was connected via WiFi to the Internet, though I believe it doesn't make a difference. The only drawback was that I had a dynamic IP from my ISP so after a week or so I had to check my IP again for the new address. Right now my ISP sucks regarding exposing services to the Internet since they have the routers connected into some NAT or something like it so exposing something to the external world is impossible, but, hey, it's cheap and it has a very decent speed.

Ok great, Sunday I am doing a fresh install of windows 10 and will be setting that up. Adding a rule to the windows firewall is easy or Norton's .. When you say forward the port 21 are you referring to forward port 21 to one I specify in FileZilla or whatever ftp program I go with OR what?

This sunday worse case scenario I set it up hard connected to the internet than set it back to wifi and figure it out by trial and error... Either way this weekend its getting set up.
Any one who helps and has the correct answer will get a free account with access to over 400 GB of game soundtracks... Doomie, you already got one headed your way pal.

I recently downloaded and installed FileZilla FTP server from the official website here: https://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=server. I installed it as a Windows service so it started every time my computer starts. FileZilla has two main entry points defined by default, one is port 21 which is where you and other people access to the actual files, the other is port 14147 for the admin interface where you manage folders, users, IP filters, etc.The FileZilla server download comes with the actual server and an application to access the admin interface to a server instance.

So once you install FileZilla server, the application to connect to a server admin interface is executed, leave the default settings which will connect to your local FTP server admin. These are:
- Server Address: The IP address of the FTP server you want to connect to for the admin interface, if you want to connect to your local server this could be either localhost or 127.0.0.1 (IPv4) or [:: 1] (IPv6)
- Port: The admin interface port, by default 14147
- Administration password: None by default, could be configured in the settings inside the admin interface

Once you connect you need to configure users and folders, this is done in Edit -> Users, here you create users (with their passwords) and assign folders to them. You could also use Edit -> Groups assign folders to groups of users.

You can test that everything is okay by running an FTP client, like FileZilla client and connecting to localhost (remember your server is local) using the username and password you've just created. Given also that your firewall has an exception of not blocking port 21, there's no additional configuration to be done if you want to access your server from your LAN, this means you could now to connect from another computer connected to the same Wi-Fi router specifying the address of the computer running the FTP server.

The tricky part is forwarding the port 21 to the external world, since this depends on your router's manufacturer. What I mean in this point is, your router is the gateway from your computer to the Internet, you can access websites, other FTP sites etc, but how can anyone from the Internet locate your precise computer where your FTP server is installed, since several computers can be connected to your router and all are bound to a single public IP (the one assigned by your ISP to your router and found here: https://www.whatismyip.com/)? This is why you need to say to your router: "Hey if anyone is accessing your public IP though port 21 then forward that request to port 21 of this specific computer", this process is called port forwarding, you forward port 21 of the router to port 21 of the computer running your FTP server.

As I said this process depends on the router's manufacturer and sometimes even on your ISP that's why this process is tricky. Here's a very good site that has the instructions on how to forward ports for most routers and even goes into explaining the specific process for FileZilla or any FTP server: http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm. In the case for my router I would need to follow this: http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Arris/TM502b/FileZilla_Server.htm

Once this is done, reboot your router and test the connection by specifying the public IP address of your router.

Hope I made this explanation clear, feel free to ask me any questions about the process.

Yealol I was looking over some of that.. I have accessed the admin page of my router and will do that later tomorrow or tonight... I made the mistake of just downloading the server interface, now I downloaded both client and server... Now to change settings on the server what do I open? When I hit FileZilla it looks more like an ftp browser rather than a server... When I click server it just shows a server interface but everything is greyed out..

thanks

To configure your server you need to access it through the admin interface application. You have to open the application:

And connect with the default parameters (see my previous post for the explanation of these ). You should be able to enter the interface now

Ok I just set up the port forwarding and since there is my computer, my girlfriends sisters computer, my girlfriends wii, DS, god knows what else plus her lap top ... I finally found mine... Chosen with my computers name and internal ip which was the same except it ended in a .4 lol..

Ok so now my questions are mostly for this file zilla.. FTP servers seem a lot different now than they were back in early 2k... I'm not trying to run a server to connect internaly, heck back in the day I could go online, than open a ftp client like cuteftp and connect to my self to double check settings.. Anyways I have file zilla and am going to mess around with it...

Whats confusing is the area I need to set up the account for ffshrine seems to look more like a ftp browser rather than a server, than I have to open another FileZilla to connect the server...

YOUR QUESTION: GREYED OUT AREA.. I AM CLICKING ON https://slimgur.com/image/EFU

ps I JUST OPENED FILEZILLA AND CONDUCTED A TEST...

Said connection closed prematurely ... This is far different than what I am used to. Look I am not giving up but tomorrow I plan to reinstall windows 10 on my computer and all the programs I normally use.

I will re download the stuff I need than go back over your pictures and instructions. Would you link the exact basic things I need to set up a server.. I got this page https://filezilla-project.org/ and downloaded both the client and server..

I opened interface and right away it had a pop up... so I was confused because I'm used to a program that I set a user account, connect online, advertise in irc what the account info is, ip, PW etc and bam I'm done..

from what I gather FileZilla wants me to connect to a server, set up an account and doing this with a dam router is problem enough...

I managed to set a port forwarding, I have firezilla oked on my fireall settings... https://slimgur.com/image/EFK

It looks like you are almost there, just to confirm a couple of things.

Your computer's IP address is: 172.16.0.4 (You should just check this since in the last photo it you are trying to connect to 172.16.0.3)

From the pictures I can tell there is a discrepancy between how you have the server and the routing configured and how you are trying to connect with the FTP client and that's why there is an error.

I assume from the pictures that you want people to connect to the server using port 6969 and not the standard port 21, so the connection should be [YOUR IP]:6969. If this is the case, then you should set in Edit -> Settings in the admin interface to listen to port 6969 as shown here:

http://imgur.com/eJOZx9U

That port should also be whitelisted in your PC's firewall

After doing this try to connect with the FileZilla FTP client to test with your LAN IP 172.16.0.4 port 6969.

I am a little concerned because I had to generate a certificate and fill out my country code, comp name etc and it would not let me store it in programs / 86 programs folder but I was abled to save it in a documents folder... Ok I managed to create a test account and generate a certificate lol, Location... INTERNETS anyways I set up the settings for tls and passive mode but this keeps coming up... WHere might I be going wrong. PS I said I would do all this crap SUNDAY but I became obsessive about figuring this crap out..

ok a few things, apparently in testing it I tried to connect with same ip more than once and it kept kicking me but I could not see where I was doing that... ALSO I generated a certificate, is this certificate good for all new accounts I create:?

Lastly when I open site manager in FileZilla and create an account, I guess I need to do that in admin interface as well?>

---------- Post added at 06:07 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:43 AM ----------

ONE OTHER THING, NOW WE ARE BACK TO NOT BEING ABLE TO CONNECT ... I HAVE 4 OPTIONS, SERVER START, SERVER STOP BOTH SHORTCUTS IN PROGRAMS FOLDER, AND SERVER INTERFACE... I CAN NOT DO A DAM THING IN SERVER INTERFACE BUT CONNECT, AND IF Connected I can edit stuff... does that sound right?

---------- Post added at 06:45 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:07 AM ----------

ok the FileZilla client where it says SITE MANAGER is for people to save other peoples ftp sites they have connected to... lazy bastards, I remember back when you had to write it out each time...

Ok well I created an account but it gives me errors when I try to connect to it via IP etc...

I noticed with the server interface I create an account, set the password etc.. than try to connect with FileZilla like I would with any server, than when I go back to server interface and check the settings it has way more characters in the password slot than I had put...
