Which do you think White mages are because in FF1&2 Dawn of Souls it looks like a guy. But on the other hand it looks like a girl. Sry if pointless.

look at this pic, I can't decide.

I think white mages are girls......they kinda look girly......sorry if it sounds sexist but its true

I've always thought the White Mage was a girl, but that's mainly because of 8-bit theatre... the White Wizard does look very mannish, and i'm sure that Bahamut only changes power and stature, not gender =/

in FF4 you get in contact with a white mage, which is a girl. But i think boys can become a white mage too. I don't think it's a problem. But it must be pure luck that all white mages have blond hair??

Aerisfreak91

yeah i thougth it was a girl too because of 8-bit.

I think it's a girl. And in that picture that is probably just the bangs. If it was a girl they would probably look like that.

*Looks at avatar*....

The 'characters' in the first FF game were never given designated genders, as it was up to the player to decide on the type of character he created, a hold-over from RPGs pen-&-paper roots.

Having said that, however, there is a piece of conceptual artwork that was not painted by the game's character artist Yoshitaka Amano (taken from the infamous Nintendo Power magazine FFI guide) which clearly portrays the White Mage as a woman, and the in-game sprite appears to confirm this (although the White Wizard has a very masculine appearence), but really, it's all up to the player to decide exactly what gender he or she portrays the Light Warriors as.

Successive FF games however, tended to portray the White Mage as male, rather than female; Minu/Min Wu in FFII seems to be male (although it's hard to tell with that mask he or she wears - Minwu is depicted in Chocobo Racing as being a man however), and the Onion Kids in FFIII on the Famicom are mentioned as being boys, which can use the White Mage job. FFIV returned the Job as being a strictly female occuaption though, with Rosa and Porom fullfuiling the role of White Magi in the game.

Besides, the White Mage can be used by both genders in games such as FFV, XI and Tactics, so its a moot point really, although I do admit that as a general rule, women are more better suited to this job than male characters, but only Square knows for sure.

Oh, and for the record, I'm actually a guy... :D

It kinda looks like a girl to me, I always assumed it was a girl in FF1, but at least it looks like they've sorted out the Hp/Mp ( I hated the Magic in FF1)

I'm going tho have to say it's just left up to your imagination. Whether that means the light warriors are asexual, or whatever. Unless, of course, someone has asked Square about it and gotten an answer.

But in FFXI can you make a guy White Mage? Or are they all girls? *I've never played, so I don't know*

Enkidoh
01-20-2005, 06:28 PM
White Mages in FFXI, like any Job, are not gender or race specific (apart from the fact that the Mithra are female only and the Galka are male only), but you can make a White Mage in the game either male or female - it's entirelly your choice.

And, incidentally, although I'm male, the White Mage character I'm playing in FFXI at the moment is female - a Mithra (I can't be bothered explaining exactly why I chose to play as a female character). But, as far as I can tell, there is no real difference in the game as to which gender is better suited to the White Mage Job - certain races are better suited to the Job than others though.

Enkidoh, it think you should be a White Wizard, cause you seem to be a genius with the white Mage and what not.

i think that they are no gender, but look more like females (well if you're playing the old one, in which you can't really see what they look like)

Black Waltz
01-21-2005, 11:23 PM
Most of the white mages have been girls, but I think the ones in FF1 back in the NES days the entire party was male, you couldnt tell when they where kids, but once u got the class change it was apparent.

my white mage finaly got leveled up....and it sure doesn't look like a girl.....but, who knows.

White mages can be male or female, it depends on the name chosen.

xdistantxdreamerx
01-29-2005, 09:51 PM
The names they let you pick are female, but you can always name it a male....but they are only little pixels, like they know what a gender is?

maybe once you get the class change the white mage goes through a cross dressing period in her life cause I think most if not all white mages are girls.

White mages can be male or female, it depends on the name chosen.

That would make Tifa a male, since I named her Rupert.

I still say it's left up to your imagination.

I think white mage is a woman, she is a little shy or some kind of priestess that cannot show her hair until a superior title... whell then she might be a woman but in final fantasy III the 4 onion knights are boys and the white mage graphic looks the same that FFI so white mage of ff1 is a long haired man or white mage job of ff3 makes the onion knights transform into girls

theMADNESS
04-28-2005, 04:54 AM
that was confusing.....

i say they are girls

kuz every ff game has gotta have chicks in it

all the others are fo sho guys so whats left... the white mage

Hallucinator
05-08-2005, 04:45 PM
yeah, its most likely a girl. why would a guy study healing magic? boys usually like to kick the shit out of stuff, not sit there and heal their allies. (see my point ?)

So you've never seen a male doctor? :(

Enkidoh
05-08-2005, 07:05 PM
Or a male nurse?

There can be male White Mages in the FF games same as there can be female Warriors, BlacK Mages etc. Gender, although having a certain influence isn't totally restricted to certain Jobs.

Porom-FF4 (or Palom?)
Job-FF3J/5
so my guess is girl square didnt wanna "Break the chain" i guess :P

Also in some games the WM has orange hair and in some its Blonde i always tend to think the sprite more girly with the blonde hair.

well I most generally think of white mages as women. Thats probably because of ff2 and ff9 where the white mages are female.

play ff5. its the sequal and you find out that they are all

Enkidoh
06-11-2005, 05:50 PM
Um, are you serious or just being cynical?

After all, in FFV, remember Reina, Krile and Farris? They can be White Mages, and they're female... Gender doesn't apply in that case...

And, it goes without saying, that FFV isn't a sequel to the FF games which came before it. FFV itself has a kind of sequel though, in the form of an anime series called FF The Legend of the Crystals, but unfortunately White Mages didn't appear in it (there was a Blue Mage though, but he didn't really do anything except act as the Queen's right-hand-man).

But that's another story...

in ff1 i named my white mage willow. well i mean she/he looks like a girl

Finalfantasyforever17

I would lean more towards a guy. Since most of the earlier final fantasys, excluding 3 which had a couple. were based around guys. But since in the earlier final fantasys you got to name every character you got i say that its probably more up to the player to decide.

Zachron

What's it matter, and not all the white mages throughout the FF series were female. In FFIX places other than Alexandria had male white mages in residence, although you only have female white mages in the party. In FF2, Minwu is a male, he's referred to only by male pronouns. There's Bannon from FF6, and there were many other white mage type characters that didn't have names or genders ascribed to them. All in all, most of the white mages throughout the series are female.

In FFI, I generally game my white mages female or gender neutral names. That solves it. Names like, Relg, Star, Courtney(Which is actually a male name that people started giving to girls some time in the 1950's and stopped giving to boys some time in the 1980's), Ali, Trudy, and several more I can't quite think of off the top of my head. Then if I don't feel like it, there's a thousand more female names i can think of.

Ruby was actually considered a gender neutral name back in the day... Then again, people think Courtney's a girl's name now.

Of course, it's not really a debate on whether they're girls or not, but rather if they're actually worth something in battle. I don't give a rat's arse about gender because FF6 males made great White Mages, not to mention the Magic Draw system in FF8 and the Materia system in FF7. Really, next time you're trying to decide whether you care about gender, think of the characters' powers first.

What's wrong with them being both? I don't really think it's restricted to either gender. It'd be sexist to think all guys are badasses who go into black magic only!
