The newly remastered Network Blu Ray of the 1979 TV series QUATERMASS presents Marc Wilkinson & Nic Rowley’s score as an isolated track, in stereo.
As usual with Network’s iso scores, the volume is all over the place. I thought it was a lot of work to fix the volume dips on their MAN WHO HAUNTED HIMSELF release, but this one surpassed it. I like this score very much, so I’m not really complaining - I just wish Network could have located the original masters. Oh, well… this is probably the best we’re going to get.
A few cues are mixed so low that raising the volume to a listenable level resulted in audible dialogue bleedthrough, so you’ll occasionally hear voices muttering softly in the background. Personally I don’t find this too distracting, but it depends on how you’re going to play this music - if you listen on headphones it’ll probably drive you batshit.
I was struck by how bass-heavy the music often is - those synths growl with almost speaker-rattling intensity. This appears to be a deliberate intention of the composers, and is very effective at low volume below dialog and effects, but a bit problematic when raised to more conventional playback levels. In general I left the bass alone, but a couple of times I had to EQ it so it wouldn’t kill my speakers.
Comments on three of the tracks:
Opening Credits. The stereo version buries the percussion elements in the mix, so I’ve also included the mono version which presents the percussion clearly.
Tituppy Bumpity. The music for the “porn cabaret” sequence is distinctly out of character with the rest of the score - in fact it’s not composed by Wilkinson & Rowley, it’s a deWolfe library track called “Stillover.” I considered not including it, but it’s an indelible part of the narrative so I bunged it in.
The Rage Of The World. This was a pleasant discovery. Virtually inaudible in the film mix, it reveals itself to be one of the score’s highlights, showcasing a rousing version of the Quatermass theme on electric guitar (electric guitar is only used twice in the score, here and in “Beneath The Stadium.”)
