There's a game on another forum I go to where we rate the music track of the person above us and give the title of the music track we want the next person to review.

Maybe this thread can be sort of like that?

The thing is that I think people would have more incentive to check out the tracks recommended if it were made into more of a game. :/

Maybe we can just rate whatever person's track we want instead of being limited to the person above us.

But whatever, my recommendation is Requiem for Cuckooland (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-TXDDi5jvw). It's a very somber sort of track you don't hear often in animated films. Plus I love Mark Mothersbaugh.

Okay, If You Want We Can Do It That Way :)
I Thought This Would Be Okay. But If You Feel That's Better We'll Do That.

Hahahaha come on guys. This went from a perfectly good "recco" thread for albums/films (cohesive works) to one for organized peer track reviewing to one for "fuck the police"-esque peer track reviewing to one that also includes video games. Sorry ManRay, VGM is VGM for a reason... I feel sorry for Goldie. His original idea was simpler and more interesting. I'd much rather be introduced to good "albums" than single tracks, the former being far more rare and the latter having limited stand-alone repeat value. Also it sounded like he wanted to add some spice to these forums and branch out from film/vg music into the realm of recording artists, though that is my own interpretation of it. I saw it as a chance to get some art culture-groove going.

To keep with The Dark One's wishes:

1. Movie: an often-overlooked classic because of its length, Heat. Or Collateral. Or anything Michael Mann.
2. Music: The Four Seasons, performed by Concerto Italiano and conducted by Rinaldo Alessandrini. I dare anyone to find me a more invigorating rendition of Vivaldi's work.

I wholeheartedly agree. You'll be surprised to know how many actually would. Same applies to Last of the Mohicans. I do think, however, that Mann still has another huge film in him. Black Hat was poorly reviewed but I thought it was a masterclass in a kind of film making that's sorely lacking and which we could use more of.

Collateral Was A Good Film & Score.

Indeed. Tom Cruise stood out in that one. He portrayed a subversive, layered and chillingly-relatable bad guy to perfection.

Here was my original intention.

Suggest a film/album (or song)you like and feel others would like, say why you like it and why you think others would.

They then say what they thought and a little discussion would commence it will help everyone connect via something they would have in common.

And it moves on with the next suggestion.....

What do you think?

I cried the first time I saw it, I was young so it obviously had an impact on me.

You're not alone there. It definitely ranks as one of the best attempts by a director to do something different. A terrible shame that the score wasn't deemed eligible by AMPAS for having been co-authored.

I would like to recommend one of my top cues from The Spectacular Now by Rob Simonsen [...] On the OST it's called "Towards An Unknown Future", on the FYC it's called "I Was Never Not Afraid".

I thought this outing was particularly brilliant if only because the music he wrote could easily play as a legit, Pitchfork-8.0-plus indie/dream pop album. Much like Ebert's All Is Lost or Reznor's and Ross' The Social Network, it's a different approach to scoring I welcome, bridging the gap between film musicians and regular recording artists. Maybe it's just me because I hate unfulfilling one minute orchestral tracks but a heavy majority sound same. I realize the generic sound is inevitable when intended to merely navigate and be functional to a story and there's only so many ways a story can be treated thematically before the same notes are retraced but that's why I invite "different" sounds. As beautiful as Interstellar is, it's only background music. Anyway, I can confirm DAK's recco- that particular cue is exceptional.

Today's movie and score recommendation: Fruitvale Station. If anyone appreciates post-rock, you'll really like Ludwig Goransson's work. I thought it was better than Mogwai's efforts on Zidane.

Brick by Rian Johnson. One of the smartest attempts at neo-noir in modern cinema accompanied by an intelligent score of equal parts wonderful and dread composed by Nathan Johnson. For me it's up there with Cronenberg's A History of Violence, Lumet's Before The Devil Knows You're Dead , Cavani's Ripley's Game and Fincher's Zodiac.

I LOVED Walter Mitty. Such a good movie. I wish I saw it in theaters.

I've probably already recommended it, but Almost Famous. It's my favorite movie. If you like Rock & Roll (the old-school 60's/70's kind, AKA real music), the setting of the mid-1970's, a great script and great performances by great actors, then you will not be disappointed. The film won an Academy Award as well, so that should say something. Also, it's semi-autobiographical on Cameron Crowe's life when he was a writer for Rolling Stone in the 70's.
