Hi everyone...
With the passing of one of the greatest film composers ever now one week ago, I had an idea of creating a full remastered catalogue of all the released scores ever done by James Horner. I have many scores of the late Horner on CD and lossless. But I am certainly missing quite a few.
So before I begin, I am doing a call out to other fellow members who wish to help provide me with lossless versions of Horner scores that I am missing. In the next few days, I will post the scores that I am missing and hope other members will be kind enough to share some of their favourite Horner scores so that I can "remaster" them and share for others to enjoy. All credit for the original source will be credited to the rightful member.
Please voice your opinion in this thread. If many of you think this is a total waste of time, I will discontinue this endeavour and ask the moderators to close this thread. However, if I sense that most people would be open to create their own "remastered" Horner catalogue, then I will consider continuing this project.
It will be lots of work but worth it so that we can all enjoy even more his great music.
Thanks...

dconline, I appreciate your dedication for this huge project very much. I have a small collection of Horner scores myself (the ones I like the most, maybe 40 or 50), but that collection is far from being complete, obviously, so I'm looking forward to what you are about to offer here, especially since you are going to restore them. And, I'm far from being familiar with all of his scores, so I'm sure I find some more gems to keep. If I can be of any help for you, I'll let you know (providing FLAC's, or ripping any of my original CD's). And, I'm sure there're dozens of people here who could do the same (JHFan especially).

Thanks to all up to now that are willing to help. For this project what is really important is: QUALITY vs. QUANTITY. In other words, I would rather "remaster" an official released soundtrack with less tracks than a DVD rip with lots of SFX included within the tracks. I know a lot of members here are completists, but I am not. Again, I tend to gravitate to a superb recording from an official album rather than a DVD rip.
As we go and people have great Recording Sessions or Expanded editions with great sound quality (and truly lossless), then I would try to see what I can do to use those sources to create the new "remaster" for the catalogue.
My list is almost finished and I hope to hear back from people to see if I forgotten any movie scores by Horner.

What about Horner scores not on your list? Or what if there are original Horner tracks found in anthologies, like this one:
Amazing Stories - Anthology 1 (Intrada Special Collection Vol. 32 - 2006)
Disc 1
1-08 - James Horner - Alamo Jobe, The Battle , Jobe Runs
1-09 - James Horner - Alamo Jobe, Travis Dies
1-10 - James Horner - Alamo Jobe, First Chase
1-11 - James Horner - Alamo Jobe, Antique Shop
I could upload these four tracks in FLAC, if interested.

Hi dconline this is certainly a big project you've started, you'll have your work cut out for yourself for quite a while. I received the links for Battle Beyond the Stars and legend of the Fall. And I thought I'd try Battle Beyond the Stars first being the older score, I played it on a fairly good Hi Fi system. I think you have done a splendid job, you haven't just increased the volume so it sounds louder and brighter, because I did that on the original CD and yours sounded better, the percussion is more upfront and you can hear the different instruments more clearly. Moving on to Legend of the Fall, with this being more modern in recording I thought yeah what can he do.....but I think you've trounced the original CD, on track 2 "The Ludlows" the piano sounds so much more clearer more enjoyable and the voices coming through on the final track at the beginning sound like they are in your room and not round the corner, and as soon as the base comes in it appears to be quite with not much distortion. I turned up the original CD to almost the same clarity and the base reverberated so overall you've version seem more defined. I said I'd only try two but now I'd like to hear what else you plan, it seemed you've joined the select few on this site (soundtrekker etc) (and others)who have the patience to take the time to remaster some lovely scores. But I do say this, please try and keep them in lossless ( flac's great) not much point going down mp3 route. Anyway I'm sure some people will probably be more technical in there description than myself, but I said I'd report back and good luck for the rest of the challenge.

Hi there. Thanks so much for your comparison. It was a treat reading your observations. Keep it up! I truly love reading these so I have a sense how people are interpreting the difference between the original score and my restoration. There will be more scores to come since I have 120 to do in all! The early scores are not easy since I dislike Horner's choice of mixing and sound for French Horns for example. Since I can't alter the mix, I try to do what I can with what I got and try to make as good as I can get for my ears without going overboard hopefully. Things get better when we get to the late 80's scores and onwards (still got a ways until I get there...).

I've been doing this sort of thing myself for years, but I'm only using my own ears to do it, nothing special.
It's a good idea, though I'd easily argue not every album needs it.
"Pas de Deux" doesn't need a remaster, and I'm not even sure why you said it did. What it DOES need is a remixing because the album mix favored the two soloists well over the remaining orchestra. That's nothing anyone can change without the multitrack masters. The live recordings people did with their phones had a better balance of elements at times, which is an odd thing to say but I guess that's due to wherever the person recording was actually sitting.

Hi JHFan. I certainly wouldn't argue with what you are saying. There are certainly many later score releases by Horner that need little tweaking if not to help give a little dynamic push on the quiet parts to help the listening experience in environments that are challenging for this kind of music (inside my car comes to mind and is the instigator to this whole process).
Pas De Deux is an excellent recording and I would simply try to help the quiet parts out with some minor EQing. Nobody has to like what I do. Not at all. It is all subjective. I enjoy listen to this kind of music this way and hope others do to. If not, the original recording is always there. I am only offering an alternative to a masterpiece.
In the end, I hope you will enjoy what I have done and what I will do so that we can enjoy even more the music of the great James Horner.

I don't have a car to listen in, but I do all of my listening in only two places:
-in my living room on a set of large home theater speakers, using just 2-channel for stereo music
-on my iPod with headphones while I am enjoying walks outside, though sometimes it ends up that I'm on a bus which is far worse.
I have iTunes but I never listen to music on my computer unless I am editing. It's just to transfer from computer to iPod, and occasionally I'll burn a CD.
The primary reason I do what I do is for a very similar purpose as you, only instead of it being in a car in traffic, it's walking outside next to traffic or birds chirping, etc.

I love JHFan's work on James Horner works, but I agree with dconline. The more versions to choose from the merrier. I, too, commute to work on a daily basis driving myself in my car and I am often frustrated by so many scores that do not maintain a steady volume, seeming to disappear completely for lengths of time.
I appreciate both of you greatly for the work you do, and I think you both have valid points.

Hi everyone. I'm asking the forum for advice. I have read the rules for the forum concerning what labels and music not to post, but as I continue this project, I am realizing very quickly a few issues:
- Though sending links via PM is a controlled way of doing things, it simply isn't efficient for large volumes of demands. Is there anything else I can do other than a direct link?
- As the project gets bigger, I am going to run out of online space very quickly. Any other suggestions/recommendations?
Thanks.

I agree with JHFan. Best idea would be to set up a second e-mail account so you can create a separate MEGA account.
You can still receive the PMs on your regular account. Another super thread I saw here recently had dozens of albums to share as well.
Whenever someone asked for a specific album, he just sent the entire collection of links. Both a time saver and very efficient :)

You could still manage through PM's for the non-linkables.
Some people here just copy/paste from a saved .txt file with the links and titles/formats etc.
Just PM the big list and let users pick what they want from the PM.
You can also designate some volunteers who are willing to accept PM's to help metigate the magnitude of PM's to come in the future.
Just ask users to pick one person to PM and not spam all available volunteers.
List them in initial post.

I was trying to remaster "The Hand" and whatever I do to the bootleg quality of this source, I can't get it to sound right at all. Some of the early Horner recordings are of horrible quality and I truly hope La-La Land, Intrada or Varese will step up and release some of these hard-to-find or inexistent scores in higher quality (one can wish no?). Therefore I have decided to revise the list of scores at the top of this post so that I filter out the scores that are bootlegs and have crappy sound and the ones I truly do not have. I will be doing this soon.
I have decided not to go exactly chronologically with my catalogue now since I am still missing some Horner scores and don't know if I will ever get a copy of them. I will make a request post on the forum to see if anyone who hasn't seen this project post can still help get this catalogue together.

This may very well turn out to be the last, unreleased work by him. We can only hope that some day, we will see this music become available to us! Thoughts anyone?? Jay Hoff / St. Petersburg, Florida

Since You are taking up quite a Huge task on Your shoulders, I must ask? Will any of James Horner's Music work for Animation Cartoons/Films & Logo's Be part of Your Collection? I'd Love to get a hold of the Music that He did For Universal Studios. You Know, The Theme song for the Logo that first appeared at the Beginning of "Back to the Future Part 3"?
I still feel that the Film's Soundtrack Album is Empty without it. Just like How the "20th Century Fox" Fanfare belongs with the Rest of the Music on a "Star Wars" Soundtrack Album.
