John Williams is getting a bit up there. When he retires (or heaven forbid when he passes) who do you think should compose the scores for the new Star Wars films? I don't see those films ending anytime soon. My vote is for Michael Giacchino. Also I have heard he won't be doing Rogue One. Any word on who will? I also think Kevin Kiner would be a good choice.

My vote is Alexandre Desplat. He's already doing the Rogue One spinoff, and I think out of all the modern composers his style is the one that is closest to Williams. Giacchino is a good choice, as well, but I don't think he's as strong of a composer as Desplat.

I'm no fan of Star Wars, but judging from Giacchino's Jupiter Ascending, I'd say he's the one that should take over after Williams.

But that's just it. The reason Williams is still alive is because there's more Star Wars coming. For as long as there will be Star Wars, Williams will live. And as cjm62790 said, it doesn't seem like the films are going to be ending any time soon. So I think we're fine :)

I agree with Ordensritter. I was already thinking Giacchino before, but Jupiter Ascending sealed the deal.

I guess Giacchino has to be at the top of the list considering "J.J. Binks" tends to use him by default in his movies.

Gah, I don't know.
I love Giacchino... I love Newton Howard... I love Williams... I love Desplat... how am I meant to pick?
I just watched LOST all the way through and every episode blew me away with Giacchino's score, so he would probably be at the top of my list.
It would make sense if Kevin Kiner took over, he currently makes the score for the Clone Wars and Rebels series', and although he isn't that strong of a composer (that sounds cruel of me because I love his work, but...) he knows what type of soundtrack the Star Wars series would fit.

Not Junkie XL. Tom Holkenborg.

Michael Giacchino proved with John Carter that he has the musical sensibility to carry on the core Star Wars films should the need arise. The anthology films can be assigned to Alexandre Desplat, James Newton Howard, and several others. Just please, unless he does a full 180 in his philosophy on the role a score should play, keep Hans Zimmer away from the franchise.

John Ottman has already proven that he can take original Williams themes and do them justice while incorporating his own ideas.

Desplat has also proved he can do that with Williams scores in the two Harry Potter films he scored. Particularly Deathly Hallows Part Two.

What if Giacchino scored Star Wars?

I did an edit for the beginning of A New Hope where I used a lot of Star Trek (2009) to play over the scenes.
The movie was nicely mixed that most music wasn't in the center channel, except a few parts.
I had it up on youtube, got taken down.
Had it up on Yahoo! Videos, Yahoo ended videos. :noonecares:

No.
Ramin Djawadi or Giacchino
Giacchino definitely, he's composed a lot of music, mainly from the Medal of Honor series, that feels like John Williams' music. Alexandre Desplat could do it also, Ramin Djawadi I'm not so sure on, I would have to hear some more of his music. There are few composers that can create the Star Wars feel. Jeremy Soule, Mark Griskey, Jesse Harlin, and basically all the others who have composed for the Star Wars video games are worthy successors.

I don't want to be a pessimist, but no composer will be able to copy Williams' style and make a great score. Desplat's score for Rogue One will at least be good, but it won't sound like Williams, and that's the best we can hope for.

Personally I'd love to see Joel McNeely get a crack at scoring Star Wars. Shadows of the Empire is a great score and McNeely has already incoporated Williams' style in the Young Indiana Jones series. He's a great composer and I would love to see him get such a high profile project. But for now I'll take another Williams score for Episode VIII. TFA is a great score and I can't get enough of it.

I'm all for Kevin Kiner, as are several others I've noticed here. He's cut his chops will live orchestras on "The Clone Wars" (2008) film soundtrack, as well as several tracks from "The Clone Wars" TV series. After nearly six seasons of that, he really compiled a massive collection of beautiful Star Wars tunes. I'm paraphrasing the titles, but Ahsoka's theme, Luminara's theme, Obi-Wan & Satine's love theme, Anakin and Padme's love theme, the "Victory" theme from Ryloth, and Ayla Secura's theme are all great stuff. And with Rebels, his "Inquisitor" themes, "Hera Soars", "Twin Moons", "It's Over Now", Thrawn's theme and "Sabine's Catharsis" are great, too. And in both TV shows, he really knows how to do the lightsaber duels. I think he's underrated because so much of what he does for TV is simply filler music. But he has more great tracks than any other composer to take on the Star Wars challenge, IMO.

I'm gonna throw out a wild card here and say Murray Gold. I know he's attached to Doctor Who probably until the end of time, but if he ever quits that or gets fired, he's more than capable of doing music that sounds, if not exactly like John Williams, is at least in the Romantic vein that the Star Wars films call for.
