Sigmund Romberg is one of my favourite composers and is responsible for some of the most beautiful and enduring melodies that stand the test of time to this day. Thanks to the success in 1945 of Romberg's "Up in Central Park", many young singers of the time showed an interest in performing his earlier works in nightclubs and on the radio. Gordon MacRae, whose glorious voice was an ideal instrument for Romberg's music, in particular performed condensed versions of Romberg's 1920s operettas on his popular program, The Railroad Hour. In the early to mid 1950s Capitol Records made studio recordings of nine of these condensed Railroad Hour presentations with MacRae, including three of Sigmund Romberg's greatest successes of the 1920s. THE DESERT SONG and NEW MOON also feature soprano Lucille Norman with opera star Dorothy Warenskjold joining MacRae on THE STUDENT PRINCE. THE DESERT SONG also includes a solo by the distinctive voice of Tony the Tiger himself, the wonderful Thurl Ravenscroft. Although these recordings do not use the original stage orchestrations, the lush vocal and choral arrangements plus brilliant conducting by George Greeley and Paul Weston compliment the songs beautifully and MacRae, Norman, Warenskjold and company perform Romberg's music definitively, in my opinion. Certainly no one performing in Musical Theater today could even come close to the caliber of virtuoso musicianship present on these recordings. This file was mastered by me using my professional editing processes from fairly pristine LP and tape sources with lively pre-stereo high fidelity sound that is still astonishing to hear and enjoy.

Many thanks for this - had to reinstall Windows the other day, and am trying to rebuild all my downloads! Had been meaning to transfer the files from my PC to one of my hard drives, but hadn't got round to my music...lesson learnt!

OVER THE MOON! I am thrilled — and very grateful — for your QUICK REPLY and the new links! It no longer matters that it is a cold and rainy day where I live; my day will be bright with this music. And it's not my birthday, nor Christmas, but almost Thanksgiving — so, Thank you a thousand times! Reputation ADDED!

I've just remembered (a good trick these days) that my parents had these for our reel-to-reel tape recorder. I played them over and over and over … Gordon MacRae's voice was perfect!
