In 1988, Mikis Theodorakis adapted and expanded his film score from the highly successful Mihalis Kakogiannis 1964 film of Nikos Kazantzakis novel, ZORBA THE GREEK into a Ballet-Opera Comique in two acts for Soloists, Chorus & Orchestra, also titled ZORBA THE GREEK. The work was premiered in the massive Arena di Verona the same year and was filmed during several performances in 1990. A 2 CD set, now out of print, was released of the complete score, derived from the live video recording. A later, abridged single CD studio recording was released of the score. Both were conducted by the composer. This is a new DSD remastering of the superior (in my opinion) live recording of the complete work and although the sound has been greatly improved, the flaws of live recording with an audience present are still evident throughout, but again, in my opinion, are not so intrusive to prevent your enjoyment of Theodorakis amazing, melodic score, one of the finest musical achievements of the late 20th Century.
It was once observed that Greece is not European nor is it Oriental.
It is Hellas and will always be uniquely Greek.
That easily applies to the always uniquely Greek music of Mikis Theodorakis, especially in ZORBA THE GREEK.
