And it goes fast
You think of the past
suddenly everything has changed.
So yeah. Covers.
What are some of your favorites? What are some that you think are especially awful? How do you feel about cover songs in general?
I tend to really like a good cover song, so my list would be pretty long. Here are a few I like though.
Jeff Buckley's cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah"
Tori Amos' cover of Eminem's "97 Bonnie and Clyde"
They Might Be Giant's cover of Cub's "New York City"
The Flaming Lips cover referenced in the title is really awesome too!

a local band's cover of ccr's bad moon rising. they made it really fast and punky.
i like no doubt's cover of talk talk's it's my life.
the moulin rouge cover of lady marmalade
limp bizkit's george michael's faith
and probably a lot more that i dont even know are covers
i love tori amos (my fave song ever is spark), but i don't like her covers. i really dislike her smells like teen spirit.
i dont like the remake of baby one more time by bowling for soup.
i like pearl jam's last kiss, but not as much as the original
or the boys of summer by whoever redid it.
i despised britney spears' i love rock n' roll
i guess i generally only like covers if they do something different with it that i think sounds like genius.
i generally hate sampling in rap, which is kind of like covering.

Placebo's version of "Running Up That Hill" - it's really haunting and just fantastic. Placebo do a lot of excellent covers.

I've never heard of anybody hating Cohen.
A lot of people do think that Jeff Buckley wrote Hallelujah though. =/
I've never heard Placebo's cover of Where is my Mind. It's not my favorite Pixes song, but I'll still have to check it out.

I don't get it. his versions are almost always better than the covers. ;-(

Covers usually arn't as good as the original, like in England when they tried to bring out "feed the world" for the third time in 25 years for charity, it hasn't sold hardly any copies, whereas in 1970 something it sold millions.

My all time favorite cover is Tool's version of No Quarter, very excellent though I like the Led Zepplin version a little better.
Though I dislike Alien Ant Farm their cover of Smooth Criminal was really good.

Don't you mean NIN covering a Johnny Cash song? I thought that guy quit recording new songs decades before he died.

Tori Amos' cover of Eminem's "97 Bonnie and Clyde"
Eh? Wasn't that song by Beyonc and Jay Z?
Anyway, I just can't get enough of Finger Eleven's cover of Depeche Mode's Walking in my Shoes (INJOKE) or In Flames' Everything Counts (same band.)
Also, Local H's Toxic is pretty nifty.

Generally speaking, I agree with you, but I think Jeff Buckley surpassed Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. Jeff Buckley has this sweeping, grandiose sort of voice, and it works with the song so well.
But yeah. Most covers of Suzanne are pretty crap, but the original is awesome.
He's one of the most covered artists I can think of.
Eh? Wasn't that song by Beyonc and Jay Z?
It's an Eminem song. It's on the album of covers of songs men wrote about women that she did.
It's strange and creepy and I'm pretty fond of it.

The aforementioned 'Me First and the Gimme Gimmes' are good fun for covers galore.
I heard Placebos cover of Where is My Mind? on JJJ live once. It was rather good.
I don't listen to many, but a few more good covers that come to mind:
Ramones - Tom Waits' 'I Don't Wanna Grow Up'
The Living End - Tainted Love (not sure who did this originally...it's the same one that Marilyn Manson did)
The Spazzys - My Boyfriend's Back (again, not sure who did this...)

Ramones - Tom Waits' 'I Don't Wanna Grow Up'
Haha, I need to track that one down. I love The Ramone and Tom Waits, so with their powers combined, something super awesome should take place.
Also, since Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies have come up a couple times in this thread, has anyone checked out their new cd yet? I've been debating buying it for a while.

My Mandi rating just went up another 71 points. Then again, of course you would have such impeccable taste. I could email you the song if you want...
As for the Gimmes new CD, that's the live one where they 'crash' that kids Bar Mitzvah, right? I heard one track on the radio, where they mixed a traditional Jewish song with The Offsprings 'Come Out and Play. I think the album'd be a laugh.
On a related note, my dad's trying to get me to track down a cover of Franz Ferdinands 'Take Me Out' done by the Scissor Sisters that he heard on the radio. I'm not sure what they sound like so...yeah.
This reminded me two things they do on radio stations here - 'Like a Version' on Triple J, where they get someone to come in and cover a song live, and they're usually great. Also, Triple M did some thing where they got artists to come in and do covers that were completely out of character eg Willie Nelson doing Smells Like Teen Spirit or The Wiggles doing ACDC. Fun stuff.
Well, I'll stop blathering now.

I really like the white stripes cover of jolene, because i love that song anyway but it just sounds so raw, especially the live version and i like the way they didnt try changing the lyrics in any way to be sung by a man instead of a woman
They do a mean one more cup of coffee (originally by bob dylan) as well, ha ha i just love jack whites voice in it
