In memory of Richard Adler's recent passing I thought the forum might like to re-visit the excellent 1957 Warner Bros. movie version of THE PAJAMA GAME. Doris Day joins virtually the entire Broadway stage cast including John Raitt in one of the most faithful film adaptations ever of a Broadway musical. The wonderful Richard Adler & Jerry Ross score is intact except for 3 totally forgettable transitional songs and benefits from greatly improved expanded orchestrations and superior conducting by the great Ray Heindorf.
A terrible new song (The Man who Invented Love) was written for the film but was wisely replaced with a live hastily filmed partial reprise of "Hey There" for which there is no pre-recording. Like all films of this period THE PAJAMA GAME's musical score was recorded on 3 magnetic tracks, but in this case the 3 stems were always meant to be mixed into monaural for the film's theatrical showings and the Columbia Records soundtrack album was released in mono only. This new slightly expanded version of the soundtrack is mixed from a combination of a inch 2 track tape mixed down from the 3 track of the songs, a music & effects track & the film's final mix. I have contoured the sound to play correctly on a stereo system which allows the orchestra to spread out more behind the singers than the original monaural mix where the orchestra and singers are locked somewhere between the two stereo speakers. This mix also sounds better through headphones, in my opinion. Enclosed is a link to a file of my mix and I hope you enjoy this album as much as I have.
