The 1974 film version of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, THE GREAT GATSBY was not well received by the critics or the movie going public. Francis Ford Coppola’s script was very faithful to the novel but instead of getting Coppola to also direct, Paramount chose British director Jack Clayton and he seemed more concerned with getting the visuals, costumes and choreography of the 1920s correct than assembling a good cast. Robert Redford & especially Mia Farrow’s miscasting as the leads was a mistake and to make matters worse the pair displayed zero chemistry in their scenes together. Despite excellent supporting performances from Bruce Dern, Karen Black, Sam Waterson, Lois Chiles & Howard Da Silva, this version of Fitzgerald’s iconic novel is a misstep at every turn except with the brilliant Academy Award winning (Adaptation) music score by Nelson Riddle, who weaves his own original themes with Irving Berlin’s song “What'll I Do” in the dramatic scoring and superb period arrangements of the 1920s tunes for the party scenes. This wonderful music makes the film at least bearable. I recently remastered the Nelson Riddle soundtrack to the 1974 film, which, to my knowledge, has been out of print for a quarter of a century and has never been released on CD. Unlike the original Paramount Records album, Riddle's dramatic underscore is programmed separately from the party source songs score. If you have never heard this soundtrack you are in for a real treat.
