GRAND CANYON is a Walt Disney True Life Adventure short that was shown with “Sleeping Beauty”, Disney’s first animated feature exhibited in 70mm, at its premiere 1959 engagements & also its 1968 reissue. GRAND CANYON was filmed over a year’s time by wildlife cinematographer Ernst A. Heiniger in CinemaScope and, unlike other films in the TLA series, contains no narration, only music. GRAND CANYON won an Academy Award at the 31st Academy Awards in 1959 for Best Short Subject (Live Action). The soundtrack features the famous concert piece, Grand Canyon Suite, composed by Ferde Grofe, which was recorded in 3 track stereophonic sound in Munich, Germany by the Symphonie Orchestre Graunke conducted by Frederick Stark. A soundtrack album from the film was released by Disneyland Records in 1959, one of the labels first stereo LPs. It has never been released on CD but the fully restored film itself can be found on the Sleeping Beauty Special Edition Blu-Ray & DVD.

The order of the movements was changed for the film. In the suite, "Sunrise" comes before "The Painted Desert" and "Cloudburst" is the last movement, while in the film, “The Painted Desert is first while "Sunset" is the final selection, and the ending of "Cloudburst" is attached to the end of "Sunset" as a finale to the film. For a better musical presentation I have restored the first two movements to their original positions but have retained the film’s positions of the last two with the spectacular finale music which featured a bald eagle majestically flying over the entire canyon for one breathtaking last look at the film’s conclusion. The FLAC file offered here is a DSD remaster from a � inch 3 track tape of the recording sessions for GRAND CANYON and sounds about as close as it must have sounded in the best equipped movie palaces of the 1950s & 60s as is possible. This was one of the most gratifying remasters I have ever attempted and I hope it meets with your approval as well.

It was a typo. Thanks for pointing it out. If you look at the credits on the artwork I provided, the conductor is correctly labelled as Frederick Stark. I have heard well documented rumours that it was Tutti Camarata who actually conducted on this soundtrack, but because of the Hollywood Musician's Union strike at the time, he couldn't be credited.

Thanks for this. The True Life Adventure series was always fascinating and fun growing up. I still remember watching "Sammy The Way-Out Seal" and "Bear Country" on Disney's Wonderful World. Or should I say, I watched many reruns on various incarnations of that show.
