Hey everyone!

I have been working on an audio representation for the career of my favorite actor, Sir Sean Connery for quite some time now. I had thought about this for a while and decided that the way I would do this was feature audio clips from each film/show he had a role in (even the ones where he was uncredited) and a soundtrack cut if possible. I have been able to get my hands on most of the soundtrack CD's and in some cases if I wanted music where there wasn't a soundtrack, I took it from the movie. In other cases where there really wasn't a soundtrack such as 1965's "The Hill", I just took a really good scene where Roberts gets in a shouting match with his superior officer. As of this writing (4/26/15), I have six rough draft CD's. Most are by decade, but as I get deeper in this project, I find that I need to split decades up so I can capture what I feel is some of the best material. I am going to use this as a placeholder for the finished products as I get them done, but for this initial launch I am making available for download the one that I feel is complete now, 1990-1995. I will continue to work on the rest and when I get them done, I will add the links here.

Covers - One thing that I would love to do for these is to have covers made. I was thinking along the lines of either movie faces of Connery or maybe DVD covers in a collection for the films that coincide with what's on the disc. If someone has the time and would like to help, please let me know.

Disc 1 (1954-1962)

Disc 2 (1962-1969)

Nashwolverine's Production Notes - Disc 2 is at the point where Sir Sean Connery's career really takes off. The first disc captures most of his early work up through his minor role in the star studded WWII movie The Longest Day. Disc 2 starts off with one of the most familiar movie scenes of all time - the baccarat table. The role that changed Connery's life was James Bond and the phrase "Bond, James Bond" kicks off this decade of Bond and other creative projects. For the Bond films, I realized that the title tracks were used so often, but I felt they needed to be included in a career retrospective because these songs really remind people of Sir Sean's run as Bond as much as the clips from the films. So The James Bond Theme, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball and You Only Live Twice are all found on this disc along with a score track from each film as well as film clips. 1964 was the year of Goldfinger, but there were also two other films that year worth noting. The Alfred Hitchcock thriller Marnie was one and Woman of Straw. Marnie is quite well known, but Woman of Straw is not talked about nearly as much. If you haven't seen this film, I highly encourage you to see it. It's quite good and finally got a Blu-Ray release in the spring of 2015. There really isn't any score music for this film, so I pulled the scene from the film where the new nurse played by the lovely Gina Lollobrigida is introduced to the family. Additionally, 1965 saw a break from Bond as Connery took on a tough military piece called The Hill. There is absolutely no music in this film, but there is one terrific exchange of words that had to be shared here between Connery and his superior officer at the prison camp. I can't remember too many films where Connery gets as emotionally angry as this moment and it's just terrific to hear. A Fine Madness was a real departure from Bond in 1966. Connery plays a poet named Samson Shillitoe that has all sorts of problems. It has some really funny moments, but this is a very odd film in my opinion. I took one scene where he talks with the therapist and then captured John Addison's main theme from the DVD since a score hasn't been released. In 1968, Connery had moved on from Bond and was looking to take on anything that was a departure from that. Shalako was a western which paired him alongside Bridget Bardot. Honor Blackman (Pussy Galore from Goldfinger) also returned with Sir Sean for this film. I must say, it's hard to believe a Scottish cowboy, but it makes for a fun film. The score by Robert Farnon is still LP only, but I transfered it with minimal popping sounds to get a decent cut of the main title. Connery closed the 1960's with one last appearance on a TV show called Male of the Species, a show that his good friend Michael Caine also had a role in. The clip taken for this project was from Connery's show called "Macneil". The last two tracks come from a movie called "The Red Tent" which was about a failed expedition into the arctic circle in the 1920's and the failed attempts at a rescue. Sean Connery played the ghost of Roald Amundsen who was a legendary explorer who had died trying to located the downed airship. The love theme that concludes this disc is a tremendous piece of music by the great Ennio Morricone.

Disc 3 (1970-1979)

Nashwolverine's Production Notes - Disc 3 focuses on a period in Sir Sean Connery's career where he continued to try and distance himself from the role of James Bond. The 1970's had some real duds but it also had some nice gems. Acting alongside Richard Harris, Michael Caine, Ian McShane, Audrey Hepburn, Donald Sutherland and others made the films better. One film of the period saw the start of one career and the end to another. 1971's "The Anderson Tapes" featured the debut of Christopher Walken but also the final film role for Margaret Hamilton who famously played the wicked witch of the west in 1939's "The Wizard of Oz."

Mr. Connery also reprised the role of James Bond one last time (officially) before bowing out and moving to more obscure films such as the gritty "The Offence" (which has no soundtrack by the way) and everyone's favorite, "Zardoz" (insert Sean Connery in a red bananahammock joke here). He fights a terrorist group in "Ransom" and takes part in a murder plot in Agatha Christie's "Murder On The Orient Express." He plans and executes one of the most daring heists in history in "The Great Train Robbery" and helps save Earth from extinction in "Meteor." The very best of the decade may very well be "The Wind and the Lion" and "The Man Who Would Be King" but your list might be different from mine.

The soundtracks had a wide variety of music but all seemed to capture the feel of the movies well. Jerry Goldsmith scored three in this period and John Barry had two (Robin and Marian besides Bond). As with other decades I have released, there will be audio from the film as well as a soundtrack cut or two. The only films from this decade that do not have soundtrack releases are 1971's "The Anderson Tapes", 1972's "The Offence." and 1974's "Zardoz." For "The Anderson Tapes", the main theme is actually on one of Quincy Jones' official releases, so I was able to use that. For "The Offence" I captured the eerie audio from the beginning of the film when his memory is playing back in slow motion, recalling everything and the realization that he'd done it. For "Zardoz", the main theme is actually a Beethoven symphony so I just used a shortened version of that. Anyone who's seen the film will instantly recognize it.

Enjoy!

Disc 5 (1990-1995)

Nashwolverine's Production Notes - I was happy with the first draft of this CD as I was very familiar with these films and in many cases knew exactly the clips I wanted to capture. With the full, expanded scores available for "The Hunt For Red October", "Rising Sun" and "First Knight" I had plenty of score music to choose from for those films. On the flip side, there was one movie that didn't have a score released ("A Good Man In Africa") and one film had the craziest production story I had ever heard, the unfinished "Thief and the Cobbler" which was over 20 years left incomplete. For that film, I chose Sir Sean's only line from the film at the very end when his character Tack the Cobbler says "I Love You." IMDB had this film on Connery's list all through this project but recently they have removed it because there are bits of information coming out that suggest it's not his voice on that film. I have kept it here anyhow, under the assumption it was. The audio comes from an ambitious effort to piece the unfinished animated film together called the "Uncobbled Cut" which can be downloaded on the internet. Two films in this time period I chose to use a song that was used in the film, rather than score music. One was "A Good Man In Africa" which didn't have a score released (as mentioned earlier) and the other was Highlander II: The Quickening. For "A Good Man In Africa", I chose the song from the end credits of the film which is called "Neo Abe Beto" by Eric Agyeman. I think it captures the fun of the film and has a bit of local flavor. Stewart Copeland does have some score music that I could have used for "Highlander II: The Quickening" but I chose the end credits song for this one as well as I felt it best captured the feeling of the film. Like Queen's music from Highlander which you will undoubtedly hear when I release the 80's CD, Lou Gramm's "One Dream" is a great way to wrap up this film and is a great follow-up to the scene of Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez's demise which I have provided here as well. My favorite track may be the last one as I was able to sync up the climactic attack on King Arthur and Camelot with Jerry Goldsmith's piece "Arthur's Farewell" so that the clip flows right into the score cut. :)

All in all, 1990-1995 has some of the best overall flow of this entire project and if you are a fan of Sir Sean Connery films as well as score music, I know you will enjoy this.

Disc 6 (1996-2012)

Nashwolverine's Production Notes - As Sir Sean approached the age of 70, his film career began to tail off, but not before he gave us a few more great performances. The remaining films that cover the period from 1996 through 2012 were small in number but had enough material to make a solid disc. My first pass at this only achieved about 55 minutes worth but that was before capturing any film scenes from the Avengers or much from Entrapment. The completed product I'm happy to say, is right around 77 minutes. Pretty much fills up a disc.

This volume starts out in 1996 when Connery was still a hot commodity in Hollywood, coming off Just Cause and First Knight. That year he had two movies, one as the voice of an ancient dragon (Dragonheart) and the other as a former prisoner on Alcatraz who was being used to help the military break INTO the prison which was being held hostage by disgruntled former military members (The Rock). Ed Harris who had just played the death row lunatic Blair Sullivan in Just Cause the year before was reunited with Connery as General Hummel. He was still insane, but in a different way. Capturing the scene between these two again makes this disc worth it. This is immediately followed by an intense piece of music that only Hans Zimmer can deliver and is a real treat. From there, it's two years before his next film which proves to be a real dud, and one he has himself said he regretted doing. The Avengers was a remake of a TV show from the 1960's. The plot was horrible though, making Connery the villain who holds the world hostage with a weather machine. As bad as the movie was, the material is fun for an audio retrospective. I captured two of Connery's better scenes and also brought in the non-score version of the Avenger's theme by Mark Mothersbaugh. Joel McNeely's score is represented with The Final Conflict. 1998 also saw Connery do a different type of movie. Playing By Heart was a movie about relationships and there were several to follow in this one. The scene captured was when he explains to his wife why he nearly left her and the reasons for it. In the end, she understood enough to accept it and their love was rekindled. The soundtrack for this movie has a random group of songs, but there are a couple of John Barry cues, one of which had to be included (Remembering Chet). 1999's Entrapment was a great movie about art thieves and the chemistry between Connery and the much younger Catherine Zeta-Jones worked really well. It's funny. I've asked so many people what they remember most about that movie and all of them say the same thing - Catherine Zeta-Jones slithering under the laser beams. Indeed! Even in the movie you can see the approval on Connery's face. In my original mix I had a clip of the training session that used bells if she actually touched one of the lasers and then added the film's main theme. To bulk up the volume though, I added a scene where she explains that she stole a Rembrandt only to find out that he had acquired it. I also added The Empress Mask track from the score which is exceptional. Moving into his sixth decade of films, Connery did Finding Forrester in 2000. This movie is brilliant and should have won him an award in my opinion. The score is also excellent and I've included a Miles Davis track remixed along with a brief scene by Sir Sean. I believe Connery may have been done with films after Finding Forrester but was talked into playing Alan Quatermain in the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen in 2003. This was his last on screen performance and he has said many times this is one he wish he had never done. The movie was fun but all over the place. Again though, for the purposes of a career retrospective, having Quatermain's opening scene as well as Connery's final on screen moment (which was Quatermain's death), is worth it. Trevor Jones score is quite good and two tracks from that were captured. Finally, Sir Sean Connery was approached by a Scottish filmmaking company to do the voice of Sir Billi, a Scottish Highlander in Guardian of the Highlands. You can tell that he's much older as his voice has thinned out considerably. The movie itself is nothing to write home about, but the scene I captured was when he introduced himself to a female character. It was very Bond-esque and I could not refuse! Adding to the Bond tribute was the title track from the film, sung by none other than Dame Shirley Bassey. It was a perfect way to close out this retrospective.

Any news on disc 6 my friend ?

Hi, life got in the way and this project got shelved for most of the summer. However, I am looking to pick up where I left off, so expect an update very soon! The base disc for 1996-2012 was finished, but I still need to add movie clips from The Avengers and I'm thinking of adding a bit more from Entrapment since my first sample was pretty short. There aren't as many movies on this final disc as this was the end of Connery's acting career, but I think I can make it stretch across most of a CD if I try hard enough.

How did you like disc 5 (1990-1995)?

Ennio Morricone's "Death Theme" from "The Untouchables" is probably the single piece of music that most vividly conjures Sean Connery for me.

All, I realized I misstated something on the original notes for disc 3 (1970's), so the info file will likely be wrong. I said that only "The Offence" did not have a soundtrack when in fact, two other films also did not have an official release. I fixed the notes on the first page of this thread, but as I said, the info file will be wrong when you download.
