Richard Rodgers� ballet music for �Slaughter on Tenth Avenue� from ON YOUR TOES was adapted by Herschel Burke Gilbert into a 40 minute film score for Universal�s 1957 crime thriller, also titled SLAUGHTER ON TENTH AVENUE, which starred Richard Egan, Dan Dureya, Walter Matthau & Jan Sterling. Gilbert�s adaptation was orchestrated by Henry Mancini and conducted by Joseph Gershenson. The sound track LP was one of Decca Records� first stereo releases in 1958. Richard Rodgers was very pleased with Gilbert & Mancini�s adaptation of his music. I transferred the LP, which had been played only a few times and was in very good shape, very good that is for an American pressing, which is to say it was far from perfect, but I restored the sound as best as I could. The stereo is wonderful and the score sounds very contemporary and reminds me of Dragnet and other 1950s jazz themes. The SLAUGHTER ON TENTH AVENUE sound track LP was only available for a short time and has been out of print for over 50 years.
