The 1959 British film, "Jack the Ripper", was marketed in the USA by producer Joseph E. Levine as a lurid melodrama, backed by a then unheard of one million dollar campaign, but the film was not successful because reviewers found the film too bloody and violent. By today's standards, "Jack the Ripper" could be shown uncut to a kindergarten class without anyone blinking an eye. For the U.S. release, Levine did replace the original Stanley Black score with a more dynamic jazz flavoured score by Jimmy McHugh and Pete Rugolo. This soundtrack was released by RCA Victor as one of its "Living Stereo" LPs in 1960 but it went out of print very quickly after the film tanked at the box office. This score has been out of print for over 50 years and has never been released on CD in the United States. This newly remastered version of the McHugh-Rugolo RCA soundtrack also includes a 14 minute suite of Stanley Black's original score for the worldwide release of the film conducted by the composer. Both of these rare soundtrack scores are well worth a listen.
