A lovely selection from her first recording in 1928 up to the title song from the film Sing As We Go.
Gracie had the likes of Carroll Gibbons, Ray Noble and Ernest Irving as back up.
Despite the impression given by her numerous Comedic numbers she had a touching sweet voice which leaves me all sentimental,
not to mention those glorious Lancashire vowels we share.
A bonus feature of many photos from Childhood up to 1934 is included as well as a info page with links.

WOW, that was super fast, thxs again for the links and I will give them a whirl…

This is a fascinating glimpse of the Mantovani sound in embryo
and a unique record of a group that is more chamber music than orchestral,
more latin tinged than jazz but still retaining the sweet crooning vocals you’d expect from
the London Bands of the 1930’s. Mantovani plays violin of course but what helps create
the special atmosphere is the use of accordian and clarinet oozing a cafe vibe.
The accordianist and arranger is Ronald Binge who remained with Mantovani into the 50’s
to create the later famous string sound of the group.

Joe Daniels and his Hot Shots – Drummer goes to Town (1936 – 41)
<a href=”http://imgur.com/zOXc3Jb”>
mmm… well, let’s try not be snobbish anonymous..
even though it’s much too late in the day for this err Dance Band Autist/ fundamentalist of course
this Jazz ‘Novelty’ outfit was very popular both sides of the Atlantic during the late 30’s.
The group create a pleasant trad/swing and latin influenced easy going vibe and the arrangements are spacious and uncluttered.
And though I cannot take to percussion lead anything in jazz, grinding my teeth through most drum solos waiting
for the music to start again! (ah ahh the ingratitude, I’m really not selling this am I..) it is never less than enjoyable..
oh and it’s out of print so enjoy @ 320 (http://www51.zippyshare.com/v/hBAJlc1R/file.html)
On a small point, wasn’t mp3 128 at one point considered CD quality.
If it was, maybe I should demand all future downloads be available in mp3 128, "’cos I want my music in CD quality, as nothing else will do." (my weird sense of humour, but as my wife constantly tells me, ‘you’re not really as funny as you think you are.’)
Again, many thanks indeed. Greatly appreciated.
my word there’s some ripping left
: )
dear Guideff
that bitrate joke made me cuckle
In fact the misses is always telling me i’m a joke
: )
and there’s certainly nothing more comforting
than the withering eye of the wife as you try to scuttle past her
unnoticed, clutching your latest batch of obscure charity shop LP treasures.
And also thanks for ‘Best of the British Dance Bands on Saville’, and ‘Joe Daniels and his Hot Shots – Drummer goes to Town (1936 – 41)’.
As for ‘Best of the British Dance Bands’. If I remember rightly wasn’t Billy Cotton still on TV with his own show well into the early sixties, with his catchphrase of ‘Whakey, Whakey’. I may be wrong about that, but I have distant memory flashes of that phrase.
I would love a link. I was considering PM-ing you, but then realised that PM’s don’t get you to the front of the que, whereas new posts get your thread up there first, as a reminder to others.
Most welcolme for any and all material of course and spot on about Billy Cotton (bit before my time mind)

another in my ‘Not really my cup of tea’ series.

never got the trad. Jazz thing, bit corny
buuuuhtt now appreciate the obsessive search for authenticity that drove Colyer and his comrades
digging ever deeper to find the source…. of course!!

TED HEATH & HIS MUSIC – Euphoria! (recordings from 1944 – 48)
<a href=”http://imgur.com/g2YPe8m”>
Solid punchy swing from Ted Heath’s band in gritty (in a good way) recordings,
Ted had worked in Jack Hylton’s band in the late 20’s then spent 8 years
with Ambrose from 1928 then Maurice Winnick, then Geraldo before setting off on his own in 1945.
A fairly decent pedigree eh What.
His big influence was Glen Miller who he got chance to meet on when Miller was on a British Tour in 1944.
raise your left eyebrow for a copy
<a href=”http://imgur.com/lmoq8sf”>
This 2 CD set is a document of the evolution of early Jazz and Stride Piano.
Willie looks back and plays an array of selections from the early 20’s showng Stride’s
evolution from classic ragtime…. essential stuff.
2 CD set (covers inc.) (https://mega.co.nz/#!XYdn3bbB!AiZD99ujtbgcdtYfJp3eqWW4pX8sJfVQeUxLEl-TH3w)
And of course, it’s a left eyebrow raised for the other guy (Ted Heath).
And thank you for ‘Memoirs of Willie "The Lion" Smith’. (Although far removed from British Dance Bands – I’ve always liked Jazz background stuff, like Ragtime, old stride and boogie – appreciated).
Yes it seems I can’t help broadening things out a bit but the other stuff will be mainly early Jazz that has some influence on the British Dance Band’s roots or later stuff that the Dance Bands evolved/generated into or Early Recordings of other popular artistes or oh dammit anything really
: )
Now’s the time to thank you, when the ‘front page’ is busy.
