I'd have to say Clannad and the After Story really did it for me.
I have to admit that watching the After Story really did it for me because it was so depressive most of the time.
And then there was those times..but for some reason I knew what was going to happen in the after story for a bit but I didn't see the other part happen.

remi 9could also beknown as remy) is an 80's anime about an orphan boy picked up by an old man and his parade animals, they perform tricks in the street to earn money, the old guy helps remi find her mother (the saddest thing is they are face to face like every 4 episodes but she doesnt recognize him and vice versa), but things go way bad after ceratin character dies.
and truly, his death is the most heart-breaking moment in anime history, ask anyone.

Some of the episodes of Naruto made me teary when they introduced certain characters' backstories. Tsubasa was pretty sad, but the manga is waaay sadder. Elfen Lied had its share of tearjerker moments.

Bokura ga Ita made me cry ^^" that scene with the train, and Yano crying... Well, couldn't stop the tears, ehehe xD

Yuuenchi
10-03-2009, 01:14 PM
The obvious tear-jerkers for me include "Chobits", "Kimi ga Nozumo Eien/Rumbling Hearts" and "Next Season", "Saikano" -the whole thing was a depressing angst-fest (oh wait, that's "Bokura ga Ita"'s description, I'm sorry), "Shuffle, and surprisingly enough, "Pita Ten". I'll probbaly have to add "Tokyo Magnitude 8.0" if I ever finish it.

And how I could forget about "Grave of the Fireflies" or "H20 ~footprints in the sand" or "Memories off" is just beyond me. And since I'm editing this post anyway, "Boku wa Imouto ni koi wo suru" and "Koi Kaze" just for the sadness inherent in any treatment of siblings falling in love. And "Air" is defiinitely at the top of the lists.

And to complete my list for today: "Fruits Basket" and yes "Kanon", 2002 -haven't finished 2006 yet.
"Evangelion" for many reasons, like oh say killing off as many main characters as possible?
"Kashimashi" oh yeah, which girl was hurt and needs Hazamu the most?...
"Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora" even with its expected ending,
"Kimikiss Pure Rouge" at various parts,
the last story arc of the 1st "Magister Negima" tv series
"Key the Metal Idol", for the way Sakura was treated.
"Elfien Leid" was tear-puller among other things, especially when he has to relieve his sister's death
"Figure 17" the way it had to end and everything
"Voices of a Distant Star"...even though I haven't yet seen the anime...the manga was a tear jerker til the very end.

I had to stop watching H20, Bokura ga, Kimi ga, Elfen Leid, and Air at times they produced so many tears.

And how could I forget about "Ef~tale of memories", the Chihiro/Renji storyline was just so....ugh...stopped watchig episodes even more times than I did Kiminozo. And "Ef~tale of melodies" was just wrong, at the end. And, naturally, "School Days" was a tear fest a long way before the "hey, Nice Boat" episode.

Hmmm... let's see..... I've seen a lot of sad animus, but the saddest would have to be Puella Magi Madoka Magica. (sniff)

SPOILERS AHEAD
This anime is sad because
1. At the beginning Madoka doesn't know why Homura is so mean to her.
2. Mami dies at the end of episode 3.
3. Sayaka dies in episode 8\9
4. Kyouko dies at the end of episode 9.
5. Madoka becomes the Supreme Goddess Of The Universe, only Homura can remember her.

Man, this series is so dark. So many die in so few episodes. (sniff)

I found Kenshin at times to be really sad, especially the Oniwabanshu storylines, Tenchi and Slayers are unexpectedly sad sometimes even though they're both comedic; Washu during the OVA when she's babysitting is actually really kind of sad. Slayers has a lot of sad moments with Sylphiel. I have a hard time saying which of the three is saddest because I find all three really really sad sometimes. Fullmetal Alchemist is very sad to the point where I can't really rewatch it easily, so I guess that one is saddest, but I really can say all 4 are terribly sad at different points... So is Ruin Explorers which I can't bring myself to rewatch either...

Actually most of the animes I've watched at all are pretty sad. Which is sort of my main issue with anime - even the light hearted stuff seems to get really depressing most of the time. I don't mind sadness in stories, but..

Overall, Galaxy Express 999. The melancholy lasts for the entire 2.5 million light year trek from Earth to Andromeda. It's 113 episodes of constant sadness so after a 3 day marathon I was depressed for 2 weeks.
Angel Heart was very sad as well, with moments that made me tear up in almost every episode after the first arc. I wouldn't say it's overall better than City Hunter but the drama is great, and I hate drama.
Saddest specific moment for me would probably be the ending of Zambot 3 when Kappei falls down to Earth and town rallies around him, I can tear up just thinking about it.
The most depressing would be Gundam SEED. Now, it wasn't sad because there's isn't a single character worthy of the slightest empathy, it was just so godawful and painful to watch that it seemed like life wasn't worth living for 2 months after finishing it. That something could be so bad was an astonishing revelation, after watching SEED even fairly mediocre series seem good to me now.

I know I posted here before, but I don't remember which anime I said was the saddest.

I'd have to say it was Chobits. It was more disappointing sad just emotional sad.

< < < SPOILERS START AHEAD!!! > > >

The show is 22 or 24 episodes long. Don't really remember anymore and I don't really care. It's been about a year since I watched the show. After several episodes we are finally introduced to a picture of a so-called "Chobit", a computer that can think and act like a human without any operating system. But that's the last you see of a "Chobit" until the last few episodes. The animation is pretty terrible, and only a small handful of episodes are worth watching. Some are just pointless. In the manga\anime the guy (don't remember his name and I don't really care) realizes he needs to go to Victoria's Secret and by Chi some undergarments. The manga has this scene at just half a page. But the anime drags it out to an entire 20-24 minute episode. And he thinks the girls there will think he's a pervert if he goes in there and buys some undergarments. Now I've had to by girl undergarments before and all I've had to do is go in there and show the employees a list of what I need and they help me find what I need. And they don't ask what I need them for. If they think I'm a pervert, I don't care. There's a 95% chance I'll never see them ever again. Anyways, the "Chobits could actually exist" plot only happens during the last 2 or 3 episodes. And they just half-ass everything like "Chi, forget the guy" "Okay chi...Wait I want him chi" "Well okay".

< < < SPOILERS END!!! > > >

I also had watched the FUNimation dub. I thought "well the show sucks, but maybe Funi has made it somewhat enjoyable." And you know what? It was just as bad. It made a lot of good talent go to waste.

Same! I was a 25 year old, emotionally stable male when I watched it. Crying was... a rare thing. Like. I think I had last gotten to anything close to that state maybe 7 years prior over a life incident.

Then I saw that, and suddenly I'm a wreck. Crying HARD. For like twenty minutes solid.

And it didn't just happen bloody once in it, did it? Multiple frickin' times.
