NOTES

Sleeping with the Enemy is a 1991 psychological thriller film directed
by Joseph Ruben and starring Julia Roberts and Patrick Bergin. The film
is based on Nancy Price's 1987 novel of the same name. Roberts plays a
woman who escapes from her abusive, obsessive husband from Cape Cod
to Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she captures the attention of a kindly college
drama teacher.
As a result of the constant pull of the innocence of Roberts' character
on Goldsmith's attention, Sleeping with the Enemy is a score with confli-
cting personalities. The dominant theme that Goldsmith provides for the
wife is as consistently charming as any the composer had ever written.
The lofty woodwind solos over tingling electronics and high strings (and
other lightly pulsating woodwinds) are just as gorgeous and soothing in
the opening scenes as they are in "A Brave Girl" and at the finale of the
picture. The theme and its instrumentation are absolutely trademark 1990's
Goldsmith in style, and the simplicity of the melody, along with its repe-
titive use, will cause it to remain in your head long after the score is
over. Unlike Goldsmith's straight horror scores, in which the drums and
brass often punctuate horror jabs with rowdy hits, the moments of horror
in this circumstance are treated to abrasively groaning electronic clanging
instead, with "The Carnival" and "Remember This" relying on uncomfortable
textures from Goldsmith's synthetic library that he would rarely utilize
in his other scores.

I'd be very interested in listening to this one. I've got the original and it's one of those late Goldsmiths that I don't particularly care for. Obelix, thanks! I've only given it one listen so far but this version is so much better than the one I have - the original Columbia, with 11 poorly chosen Goldsmith cuts plus Van Morrison's Brown Eyed Girl, which is featured equally on the cover. This is one of the many Goldsmiths on early cds that seemed a very disappointing soundtrack but turns out to be great in an expanded version. Which I don't understand. When cds first came out, they had the same 80 minute capacity that they do now. I always wondered how DG could fill a classical cd with music from end to end, even over-burn the capacity, and Varese, say, would give us less than half a disk of Goldsmith or Donaggio. And sometimes the converse is true: if there is a shorter 90s Goldsmith cd that I really liked, often I really don't like the expanded version. Like now the companies are dredging up every alternate cue and unused bit just to fill the disk. In either case, with no real regard as to creating a satisfying listening experience. At least if it's too much, if you want to you can edit and re-burn.
But this soundtrack is a real winner all around. Thanks for sharing! Goldsmith was most often wonderful, as he is here. Much appreciated!
