Hi Kenny!
Well, I dont have this or the 'Herrmann at Fox' version, but I have the LaserDisc version. I can tell you there is a VERY obvious improvement of sound. Anyway, you know the labels. They are writing 'with highly improved and remastered sound unlike the original release bla, bla, so its better to invest the money in our release bla, bla', but in the end the human-ear can not recognize any difference! :P

Thanks!! I've got the Herrmann at Fox box but I've been dying to hear this, to see if it really sounds that much better, as the label claims, before I buy. I've already got at least 2 lps and 3 cds. Back in the day when cd shops were still new, I even got a Herrmann collection just because it had the previously unreleased Arlington cut on it. What makes you think this could be one of my favorite 5 soundtracks of all time?
Edit: listened to about 2/3 of it so far, on the big stereo. It seems cliche to say it's like hearing it for the first time, but it's like hearing it for the first time. The only thing I can compare it to is in photo editing, where you increase the brightness and the contrast until the colors are all brilliant and sparkling. It's like all the sounds are richer and more expanded, cleaner and clearer. from any version I've ever heard before, including the Fox set. Beautiful, beautiful soundtrack.
It really does sound that much better, as Kritzerland claims. I wouldn't have believed it. As soon as I can figure out who's got the best shipping, this is so ordered. Anyone who likes this album absolutely must have a permanent copy. Barely the second week of January and this is the album of the year for me.
This is so great! Thanks again for your time and effort. Much appreciated! Someone owes you a commission.

I've been dying to hear this, to see if it really sounds that much better, as the label claims

To my knowledge, Kritzerland HAS NEVER made such a claim. In the product description on their website, they do praise the way the album sounds, but they never say anything about the sound of previous editions. To me, this suggests that the release has nothing new to offer as far as sound goes. I haven't actually heard it though.

It has been given a new, fresh mastering and sounds absolutely incredible in that wonderful early Fox stereo sound that was as unique as the Herrmann score.

Hey Teddy,
you have to be careful with Kritzerland records! I remember buying the "Laura" score by David Raksin. It was sold out before it came out, just by pre-orders.
Look at different soundtrack shops, they have some copies, guaranteed! Like intrada com, they hae a nice shop! :-)

Sorry, I guess I just assumed that was what they meant when they said the new fresh mastering sounds incredible. That compared to something has to be implicit.

It may be a terribly unfair comparison, an mp3 against a wav file, but normally I have a really hard time distinguishing between the two, or at least 320 mp3 and flac. That said, there is a world of difference between the laserdisk set's gold cd mp3 and Derik556's wav. The ld cd sounds good but muddy, perhaps not quite the quality of the Fox box(?). I've got a few gold cds from back in the day and engineering has come a long way, I've found. None of my priceless relics of the past sound as good as any of the the new off the shelf versions. The K'land's absolutely sparkles in comparison. Sounds like it has more range, the sound is so clean, and I can hear clearly more separate instruments that I've ever heard before. The two therimins are obvious weaving in and out between each other, something I'd never really noticed before. But I'm listening to it in front of an ancient huge component system, not with earphones or on a player, so I can't compare sounds with those devices. I thought/I think I know this soundtrack note for note but hearing the K'land is a great treat.

Been to every cd seller I can think of online and there doesn't seen to be a copy anywhere. Not even EvilBay. Can you imagine what it's going to be selling for when one does show up? Yes, fingers very crossed for a second pressing.

Thank you for letting us hear these versions. Most informative and fun. Man, what a sweet set that laser disk is! I'd still kill for it. Don't even need a player. Signed by Robert Wise?? Beautiful!

huge upgrade if you come frome the arista release. minor upgrade, sound wise, if you come from varese sarabande release. overall kritzerland did a fine job. if you have neither release, kritzlerland is the way to go. if you have the varese release you have ask yourself if you want those extra tracks and afaik two new tracks to make this release the complete score.

all in all.... kritzerland wins. end of story.

Thank you very much for sharing. Been collecting classic scores recently, so I figured I'd add this one to the list. The only Herrmann scores that I had were Vertigo, Psycho and Obsession, so I wonder what this will sound like. I think it's a safe bet, though, to say that it's far superior to the score of the remake. Normally I don't like to trash composers, but let's be honest, Tyler Bates is nowhere near the level of Bernard Herrmann. And I'm saying this as someone who thought his score for the 2008 film wasn't so bad, compared to his other work.

msuperfan
06-22-2015, 08:16 PM
I agree that it's too bad that scoring trends seemed to have moved away from the romantic-era-inspired themes, motives, and such. That style is more attractive to me when listening. Although "bang-wham-clank" can often be appropriate to an onscreen moment, most of that style (Zimmer etc) is to me not worth listening to separately, unlike Tiomkin or Herrmann or the master Goldsmith, etc. When you're talking about music, "not worth listening to separately" is a strong statement I know, but just my personal tastes.

Well, I think a lot of people for get that film music first and foremost is created specifically to match onscreen action. Like you said, what works within the film might not work on its own. Even with Herrmann's scores, there are moments (like in Vertigo) that are very loud and almost irritating to listen to. Most of the score is very pleasant and beautiful, so it's almost easy to forget it's not just a piece of classical music.

There are many composers who use this high-and-low style whose work I sometimes can't appreciate because of that factor (Giacchino, Brian Tyler and other modern composers come to mind). Goldsmith was one of the few who was able to convey action or surprise in other ways than going loud.

But I'm also saying this as someone who is very much a modern film score fan. Herrmann is the only pre-Goldsmith/Williams/Barry composer that I enjoy. The techniques/styles are to antiquated and dated for my tastes, much like the 50s being the first decade that has more than a handful of films that I consistently enjoy.

herrmann score was groundbreaking, and add so many dimensions to the movie. Herrmann music doesnt allow a movie to be superficial, he always adds something of interest that makes the movie more grownup.

Now herrmann's music outside the movie its an interesting one because unlike rozsa who I think gains "pleasurebility" on the stereo, herrmanns music devoid of a picture its for me at least, could be a difficult listen. Vertigo and psycho are notable exceptions, as there are many others, but he was so avantgarde in his style that sometimes you struggle to find it enjoyable. Obviously Im talking from my personal point of view, and I dont think theres been a more gifted or understanding composer of the art of movie scores. For me herrmann is the number one, If I had to direct a film in the golden age of hollywood Id gone for herrmann, though hed probably insulted me and had been a pain to work with, but as a listener his music can have "thorns"

Thanks - Herrmann is the best.

BTW - regarding the difference from the Varese Fox Box, it sounds better, but they also re-did the stereo field - ie - instead of some elements being hard left and right, they moved them closer to the center ("Elevator"). This makes it easier to listen to on headphones, but then again I kind of like the disorienting effect of the original as well. The overall sound is better, more bass, etc...but in a couple cases the theremin is buried by the added bass ("Escape"). In any case good to have both :)
