Now that's a rare and unusual release from our oriental friends. I got this from a torrent site several years ago, but it's not been seeded anymore. It was originaly uploaded as DVD-A ISO image. Extracting lossless MLP is pretty easy nowadays, so here it is! :)

This is the 1975 release. Meaning: it's the re-recording version we all know, same tracklist and all. But it was mixed diferently. Listen to "Chrissie's Death" from 1:04 on and you'll hear the difference from the standard release.

It's obviously not my transfer, as I don't have any record player for a long time (let alone one that can properly decode a 4-channel LP).

The filesize is rather large (1.18GB), since this is a 96kHz/24bit 4.0 lossless. So I'd recommend a download manager (JDownloader, MiPony, etc) for those who have problems with Mega.

There's also a quadraphonic release for "Earthquake" and the first "Godfather", but I don't think those were shared anywhere... :(

1. Main Title (Theme From "Jaws")
2. Chrissie's Death
3. Promenade (Tourists On The Menu)
4. Out To Sea
5. The Indianapolis Story
6. Sea Attack Number One
7. One Barrel Chase
8. Preparing The Cage
9. Night Search
10. The Underwater Siege
11. Hand To Hand Combat
12. End Title (Theme From "Jaws")

Anyone have any tips on how to convert this back to 2 channel. I have a Fiio Flac player but despite it being a flac file it simply won't play at 4ch. I have both EAC and Foobar.

AMAZING. Most CD-4 quad decoders don't even function anymore. What a treat. It sounds incredible. Thank you!

--update--

I am BLASTING the waveforms by 25DB and can only hear tape hiss in the quiet sections. No vinyl rumble or crackle at all, and yet there's loads of high end frequencies, which de-click software doesn't yield. I am even hearing the musicians' movements around the stage, and no vinyl artifacts. Is it possible this bootleg WAS made from the quad mixes' original tapes???

Nonetheless, this is an epic find.

Hmm. I'd actually like more info on this "re-recording". I'm not familiar with this at all. It's definitely not the film versions of any of these tracks, nor the OST versions. When was this done, and who did it? Is it still Williams conducting? It's just so jarringly different that I can't ignore it...

The film versions were only released in 2000 by Decca (with not so good sound quality, but who cared back then?).

It was always a common practice to release re-recorded versions of OSTs. Maybe it was cheaper to do that than to pay the re-use fees imposed by the AFM in those days. The Star Wars trilogy and Raiders of the Lost Ark were an exception because they were recorded in London, and the re-use fees there were MUCH cheaper, as I read somewhere. The funny thing is that the original 1977 OST of Close Encounters of the 3 Kind was not a re-recording, and it was recorded in the USA. Maybe Arista wasn't so cheap on that as MCA was with their catalog. Go figure! But in the mid 1980's, I guess things changed because most OSTs started to be released using the actual film recordings.

Still, this specific album has some mixing differences than the standard album... but are still re-recording versions nonetheless.

I really have no idead about the source. The original torrent file I downloaded many years ago didn't have anything other than the ISO image. It was like a big batch of CD-4 vinyl tranfers, most of which were rock albuns and other music styles, but no OST. Apparently, this was transfered with the batch just because it was in the middle of the collection. I guess the owner took the time to do everything he had before his equipment would wear out completly and he wouldn't have a chance to properly listen to his collection, and I imagine one can't easily repair this kind of equipment today. Lucky us!!!

I noticed the absence of common vinyl anomalies (pops, clicks, etc). I read somewhere that those CD-4 vinyls can degrade very quickly, even if well cared. It's still baffling to me how clean this sounds. But I wouldn't bet this was sourced from original tapes...

The MEGA link in the first post works.

Thanks. It wasn't available a few days ago but I'm glad it's up again. I burned the tracks to CD and then deleted the archive only to find out the disc wouldn't play in a regular player. Won't be making that mistake again.

Thank you. Quadraphonic Vinyl! NICE, I remember when Quadraphonic Vinyl's came out and ALL four speakers you could hear different sounds. But you needed a Quadraphonic receiver to listen the Quadraphonic Vinyl records. And the receivers at the time were a least a couple thousand dollars. Quadraphonic was the first surround sound home system on the market. Again thank you.
