Your cousin's friend doesn't know what he's talking about. ;) What IS true is that the American and Japanese versions of the first couple of FFs are different.
FF4 was called "FF2" in the USA, and FF6 was called "FF3". However, the original FF3 wasn't called "Tactics". They are two different games. ;)

Oh, so i would be able to find FF3 for the playstation then? The only classic FF's i can find and buy in the shops are Final Fantasy Origins (FF1 and 2), Final Fantasy Anthology (FF4 and 5), and FF6. Would i be able to get FF3 for the playstation on its own or.....?

the true, japanese, FFIII has not been released here yet, but i have heard that they are releasing it for the Nintendo DS, so you'll have to wait to get your hands on a copy

I've tried to get FF3 Roms, but it's kind of hard to do because of the conflict of names with FF6. I guess we're gonna have to wait!

I've played a translated FF3(j) rom, and I have to say, it's easily the best NES Final Fantasy. However, Synile is right - you'll have to get a Nintendo DS to play Final Fantasy III on an official translation.

I wonder why they released FF 1,2,4,5,6 on Psx, but not 3, that seems very strange to me...

Can't forget Square-Enix is a bussiness meaning, $$$$
they can release this later and make there money, but also I don't think FF3 would really fit with any of the packages they've released

FF1 and 2 was released during the end of the PSone's lifecycle.... so basically, they couldn't fit it in before it faded out.

The only thing FF3 has in common with FFT is Job system and the Equipment Set up. And FF3's job system is totally different from FFT's. It's more like FFV's really. FF3 also holds in Common with the original FF that you play as the four light warriors.

What exactly is the storyline of FFIII anyway?

Four kids fall down a hole... Later the world ends.

Oh, well, ruin the ending, why don'tcha. ;-) Final Fantasy III is easily the longest, most involved NES RPG. It was designed to play out like an interactive movie, just like Final Fantasy IV a year later. A lot of the same minds had input into both games - the whole idea of space / the underworld, the twins of Light and Dark joining forces, class/job changes, and best of all, dual-wielding weapons! FFIII is decidedly less linear though. Even with a guide it's easy to get lost. Fortunately, traveling around the world doesn't take much time when you have access to four airships, a submarine, and other such equipment.
A little insight with regards to the translated ROM file floating around the 'net... the work was very well done, which can be expected, since the same individuals worked on both the FF2 and FF5 projects. But no Squaresoft game I've ever played has taken itself that seriously, not even Front Mission. Seriously, the script is ridiculously dull. I hope the prospective DS version plays better, but I'm deathly afraid they will ruin the spirit of the original game by throwing in a bunch of stupid mini-games just to have us tapping with that stylus... :-(

I have that rom tucked away somewhere, I've only ever just started to play it. If I remeber correctly the four characters you get at the start are perfectly identical except for there coloration. I want to play through that before the DS version comes out so that I can see just how much change is actually taking place.

ah! the game about the 4 identical twins. Yeah, it's a rare game... And i still think FF4(jap) and FF5(jap) are better than FF3(jap). FF6 remains the best!
uhm.. anyway,
your cousins friend doesn't know anything about FinalFantasy.
FF1(jap) - FF1(usa)
FF2(jap)
FF3(jap)
FF4(jap) - FF2(usa)
FF5(jap)
FF6(jap) - FF3(usa)
FF7
etc....

FF3 was the best FF I've ever played. It was a lot less draining than FF4, but just as long, even longer. I loved it!
The people in the beginning only look the same because they are the same job (the weak, starting one: Onion Kid). Of course the super-hard-to-get Onion Armor is the best in the game, but other than that you can change to the traditional Fighter, Black Mage, White Mage, Monk/BlackBelt, or Red Mage (no Theif at the beginning) as soon as you get out of the first dungeon.
You unlock jobs (There are a LOT) by rescuing the light crystals, which is the main point of the game. (Like lighting the orbs in FF1.) It also shares Black and White Magic levels 1-8 with FF1, but there is also Earth Magic and Call Magic.
This game is so long I still haven't beaten it, athough I am towards the end.

FF Tactics is not numbered.
Also, just because Origins was for the PSX doesn't mean you can't play it on the PS2. It was just small enough to be run on the PS1 as well.

You can get onion sword, helm, armor and arm(?) if you do the folowing things
give all items to fat chocobo except fangs(coz simply you can't) & go to Ur and buy 99 potion and which ever you want: leather - onion helm, leather - anion armor, copper -onion Gauntlet, hi-potion - elixer.
now this is not tricky but long pain in ass process.
Place 99 potion on 6th row on left hand side column and the item you want get on below it. go and fight enemies that drops potion after battle (I normally fight Goblins in Altar Cave). when they drop potion, the item you placed changes.
But I must warn you that you have to position items after each battle (this is what I meant of pain in ass process).
Changing to onion sword will take much longer unless youre willing to ditch Ragnarok. I did it in early stage from long sword and if I remember correctly it took about 15 changes (potions).
Oh just one more thing. If enemies drop 2 or 3 potion at time, youll also get 99 Kaiser.
