I have just gotten past Astos with my game. Things seem to be improving quite a bit, as the thieves actually do a decent amount of damage now. I might even be able to level up against something that is reasonable. Anyone else have a game going?

Isn't going through Final Fantasy with just one character harder than this?

What I want to see done is going through the game with all white mages. =-o I never do well in this game unless I have a good balance of characters. Even having two of the same character in one party can mess me up.

You've both got it all wrong. With just one character, he gets all the exp, so he levels up really fast. And with four white mages, you can actually kill geists, which have caused many a game over in my game. Plus, white mages can level up on the peninsula east of pravoka by beating zombulls with hrm. Thieves just aren't good for anything but running away, so when you can't, you're screwed.

Eh. The difficult part about beating the game with White Mages is getting to class change (Life2 and Barrier/Wall are essential spells for me). Remember that your characters stand to gain more from a level-up after class change than before, so the tough part is making it to class change at a lower level so you'll have more powerful White Wizards for the fight with Chaos.

Thief is just a weak class by any standard and Ninja isn't really much better. Their hit points, armor availability and post-class change abilities are weaker than a Knight. Even the FF1 Explorer's Handbook recommends against using two Thieves or more in a party. (In FF3, though, Ninjas are superb fighters and their Shuriken Stars are downright deadly.)

I beat it.. at level 1. Fucking newbies you guys suck

Thats b/c in FF3 a knight turns into a ninja lol.

I have played most of FF1 with all thieves. Astos and the fiends suck, I had to use save states on a few to get critical hits every round. (BANEd Tiamat thoguh). I am right before the temple of fiends at about level 32. It goes downhill fast after Astos, which is good. I also didn't get the class up.

I got bored with that though, and now I am playing it with ONE thief, no class change. I am also not using save states. I am compiling a record of this in a "journal." I got the idea from www.fforigins.com, where there are several journals already. If you want to see a 4 white mage, 1 white wizard, 1 red mage, and 1 ninja journals, check it out. Anyway, on my thief game I am level 12 before the marsh cave.

Thieves are harder than white mages because you have no magic (that means no EXIT, no HARMs, no LIFEs (If you are playing more than 1 character), no RUSE/INVS/FOG, and no MUTE. All of which are essential to beating an all white mage game).

Single Character Challenges, despite the extra experience, are harder in my opinion. In an SCC, you have to do every attack yourself, so without magic or magic items (a.k.a. the beginning), making groups of 6 or more insanely hard. I cannot beat 4 (maybe it's 5) Kyzoukus (sp?) without dying on my solo thief game, even at level 11.

I know 1 thief is harder than 4. That's because I'm pretty sure it's literally impossible. I finally finished my all-thieves game at level 35, and it was still pretty tough getting to Chaos (beating him was easy with the Masamune.) And even THAT was with class change, but no save states (I was playing on a real NES, not an emulator.) I really doubt that a single thief (not ninja) has a prayer at beating the last dungeon, even if he is at level 50. You just have to have armor to make it through that place. Well, I don't think that's going to stop you from trying, and if you prove that it is possible/impossible, please post it!

What makes you think white mages would be so hard? They can use spells like ruse, fog, cure, and eventually fade. Plus, they have just about as good defence and attack as thieves. It seems like you don't realize just how much thieves suck. I don't think it's even possible with one thief. Even if he's at level 50, his defence is just too weak.

P.S. You are all talking about the original FF1, right? Not origins or DOS?

Yeah... it would be different if a thief could actually steal things. If Locke went into a FF1 game, he'd have a chance.

I think four warriors would be a little dificult becaus they cant use any spell so idems are your best bet.

I reakon its best with 3 warriors and a red mage.
Thiefs are to crap 4 me to even bother thinking about. Only having a red mage stops u getting the ultimate black/white majics but most of the time u end up using meele any way. The red mage is just to back u up with a little healing etc while not expossing a physicly weak side to your team.

That's not really true. It might seem like it would be, but fighters take close to no damage at all. Fighters are all but invincible, since they can use all the armor. Thieves, on the other hand...

You've just gotta keep at it. Beating Astos was the hardest part, and I was lucky to pull that off at level 12. Once you beat him, you can get decent weapons.

Although... it's entirely possible that this person only went as far as the bridge at the very beginning, and shut off the game when the words came up, thinking that was the end of the game.

But that's off-topic.

Well, I've never had a theif in the party, Ever. I've tried it with 2 White Mages and 2 Black Mages. It's the only way you can get all the spells. It's actually been quite fun. Now I've never tried to go too long with just one character. I've done one character at a time to level up faster, but I never tried to go through the game Solo.

If you're levelling up all of your characters to a certain point, it doesn't go any faster if you only level up one. If you're trying to have one character stacked so that he can own all the enemies before your other characters die, that's one thing, but if you're trying to level up your entire party, it's best to do it with all of them. And you said that 2 WMs and 2 BMs was fun. 4 thieves is not.

listen, i just beat FF1 with all thieves, and i hate you for making me try. it sucked, i got so frustrated that my cat won't come near me (i tend to throw NES controllers around). i will never do that again, he he he he....i didn't think i could do it...Chaos will forever roam my nightmares. On a lighter note, if you are an FF fan, you should try it once. i'm going to stick to the easy games now...like balloon fight. in honor of you FF1withallthieves i say grruuu.

The Original FFI was hella harder.

Definitely true, from what I've heard. I never actually played origins. The very first RPG I ever played was FFI for NES, before SNES was even a popular system. I was a little too young for RPGs back then...

There were a couple of atrocious features of FFI. For example, you had to press A 297 times to buy 99 heals, and you very often had to buy 99 heals. There's also the "ineffective" rule, where you have to plan out your attack or your characters will swing at thin air. I'm sure they took those out in origins.
