A CHRISTMAS CAROL THE MUSICAL
2004 TV Film soundtrack

Music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens (1994)
Budapest Film Orchestra conducted by Michael Starobin.
──────────

A Christmas Carol, also known as A Christmas Carol: The Musical, is a 2004 television film based on a 1994 stage musical of the same name, with songs written by Alan Menken (music) and Lynn Ahrens (lyrics). The musical is based on Charles Dickens' famous 1843 novella of the same name, produced by Hallmark Entertainment for NBC. It was directed by Arthur Allan Seidelman and features Kelsey Grammer as Ebenezer Scrooge, Jason Alexander as Jacob Marley, Jesse L. Martin as the Ghost of Christmas Present, and Jennifer Love Hewitt as Emily.

Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Christmas_Carol_(2004_film)).

Saying that these are compositions from the golden era of Alan Menken (two years after Aladdin and one before Pocahontas) should suffice. The beautiful soundtrack for the stage got polished treatment for the TV version of 2004 and no fan of Menken or musicals will be able to listen to it just once. Watching the movie or letting it play in the background counts as a listen too.

Merry Christmas to you too, Zaphod2010! \o/

You're welcome. And I should thank you for your suggestion of the file hosting service five years ago, because, as you can see, I'm still using it. I don't think I've followed any other advice for so long! :D

Happy season to everyone.

Never cared much for the movie itself, but I am one of those people who have left it running just to listen.

This is why Santa has Rudolph - To cut through the traffic jams ;-)

After auditioning your upload, I was moved to go ahead and buy my own physical copy. I did the scanning, but never returned here to add it.

So, my gift to you for this Christmas: Cover and booklet scans in glorious 600-dpi!

And it works very well as a soundtrack, doesn't it? It's only 15 minutes longer than the album, so well packed with music. I knew I was not the only one.

Just watched the movie again last night, and got that warm and fuzzy feeling all over again...

I've never been a huge fan of Kelsey Grammer (tho I've watched way too many episodes of "Frasier"), and upon hearing that he was to play Scrooge in this film, first there were eye rolls, and then rampant skepticism, but after watching it I have to say that he (as well as the rest of the cast) did an outstanding job and really brought the 'spirit' of Dickens' tale to life in a way that I would never have thought possible.

I have added it to my yearly 'must-watch' lineup of Christmas films and have seen it about six times so far :)

Welcome, capitan moscardon. Happy listening!

Yes, Zaphod2010, all actors did a great job. From Jason Alexander (I never get tired of him in Link By Link) to the children, support actors or those fantastic dancers.

The production was designed to be very light on the gloomy side, in a gentle way suited for the youngest spectators. Scenes of the ghosts visiting Scrooge or the cementery at night become almost funny games and daytime activities when not plain beauty, domains where Menken excels with his gift to add humanity to anything.

While movies are usually a chain of meaningful events that tell a story, I enjoy musicals as creations where all elements work to service the delivery of music. So it would be easy for me to buy the whole pack even if some aspects had very low quality, because the songs would be the main object (maybe in this case, second to the moral that rich people should give us their money to be happy).

And there's excellent singing too. Grammer did it well for his role, but the performances of the rest of actors really left little room for improvement. Not to mention the perfect arrangements and musical direction, that are critical for this genre and we know so little about.

As you said, it's a must for these days. The only part that shocks me every time is the line "JOHN WLLIAMS Scrooge, you will go to prison for non payment of debts". Auch...

Fantastic, thank you! They're now linked in the first message.

In the liner notes, Ahrens and Menken celebrate that all the main actors could really sing themselves; and that brought to my attention again the performances of the rest of them.

You know the singing of Scrooge's mother in the court and the cemetery, right? I was curious about the owner of that great voice, googled it and, not surprisingly, Ruthie Henshall is an award-winning artist of musicals. Scrooge's nephew Julian Overden sang lots of musicals and also Sondheim and Rodgers-Hammerstein at the Proms. The choreographer credited in the album made an adaptation of the original work by Susan Stroman for the stage (she's credited in the movie)... and surely we could go on. I mean, as it happens so often, the injection of talent and experience everywhere made the product a success.
