I know this is the wrong thread and im sorry. Did Cloud ever make it into SOLDIER? I personally dont understand this because they had him return to Nibleheim in a SOLDIER uniform which means he made it. But maybe its because he made it into SOLDIER but never made SOLDIER 1st class like he planned.

as a more complete answer, cloud was a shinra guard. after zack was killed by sephiroth, cloud ended up taking his clothes and sword. he never made it into SOLDIER.

You're all wrong. Zack survived. Cloud took his sword after the Shinra soldiers killed Zack and left Cloud for dead.

*ahem* I'll try to help. (big spoiler, second or third disk, you have been warned)

Zack and Cloud were both alive when Hojo found then in the Mako Reactor in Mt. Nibel, granted they were pretty close to dead. For 5 years Hojo used them as experiments in the basement of the Shinra Mansion. Cloud reacted violently, while Zack reacted very little to the Mako infusions. Finally, they were able to escape, Zack almost dragging poor Cloud out (remember when he has Mako poisoing in Midel? Same thing). They hitch-hike on a yellow truck, where Zack helps Cloud out of his Shinra uniform and into a spare outfit that Zack has. They get to a cliff overlooking Midgar when Shinra soldiers find then, shoot Zack until he's dead, then shoot him some more. They leave Cloud for dead. Cloud drags himself to Zack's side and takes up his Buster Sword, then makes his way to Midgar where Tifa finds him at the train station. The reason Cloud thinks he's in SOLDIER is cause durring the 5 years they were prisoner, his memories and Zack's memories got mixed up in his head. The memories Cloud has of being in SOLDIER are Zack's. But if you know this when you get to Kalm, it's not hard to pick the real Cloud out. All of this is explained when the Lifestream explodes under Midel.
