The soundtrack album to James Horner's beautiful "Balto" was released in 1995, a time when producers and sound engineers liked to showcase CD dynamics.
Such dynamic CDs, however, are not very enjoyable, especially with some environment noise around. Frequently you have to turn up your volume to really hear the quiet passages only to blow your speakers or your eardrums a few seconds later when the orchestral "tutti" starts.
The Balto CD was especially annoying in that regard, which is the reason I did not play this fine Horner score very often.
For this release, I compressed the tracks carefully, trying to balance dynamics with accessability.
I hope you like the result.

The same reasons you cited are the very reasons why I hadn't listened to it either. Looking very forward to listening to it. Thanks.

I couldn't agree more. I keep waiting for a label to bestow us with the deluxe treatment of Willow but to no avail as of yet.

Please give feedback about my efforts. I'll do "Willow" as well, if you wish.

Uncanny! I was just thinking the other day about how horrible this CD sounds. Thank you!

I did Willow a while back, and even split up the longest cues. Haven't listened to it in forever, though.

JHFan, did you ever share it? I don't remember seeing it. Your work is always amazing. I've been enjoying the Customer Complete Score from Jumanji! :-)
Generally, I use the Audiostocker plug-in for Winamp to overcome such issues. Thanks for the share though! :)

That would be awesome! I love Willow, but I don't love the mixing. Ends up giving me a headache! :-P

No I never shared it. I've done a lot of subtle things to a lot of albums but haven't shared them.

6 links for an album ? LOL :)
Anyway, thanks a lot ! It's always a pleasure to discover 1995's score from J.Horner... One of my favorite Horner's score is Braveheart, 1995.
Willow is also one of my favorite Horner's score, so please... Give us a new edition ! :) It will be great.

Well, here's the reason for this: I live in a rather underdeveloped country and have to go through some effort to upload anything. While uploading "Balto" my connection broke several times.
Sorry for your inconvenience.

Please do! I think you'll make quite a few members happy, including myself.
Especially your work on "Troy" (which we discussed in private lately) would be very welcome !

Thanks for your work and taking the troubles of the upload, Kobayashi-Maru. I hadn't listened many times to this one, but it's a nice album that I'll play more often, because your changes are very welcome. And despite my skills of audio editing are close to absolute zero, I'm curious about how you did the compression: was it globally, in a per-track basis, maybe even more specific?
I hope you don't mind that I added your avatar to the images I'm embedding in your version:

Dear kooke, thanks for the nice custom cover :-)
I did overall compression using the foobar2000 software, which is actually a media player, but with incredible sound engineering power. For your convenience, I separated the tracks afterwards. For myself, I would have made one single long track, since I like to listen to soundtrack albums continuously as I would listen to a symphony.
Track-by-Track compression would have made no difference, though, due to the clear separation of the tracks on this particular album.

My pleasure, Kobayashi-Maru. I'd rather say "the nice cover I slightly customized", though; lots of respect to the good artists on the forum. ;)
It's interesting how you did the compression. There are many people that like foobar2000 but its possibilities for audio editing were news to me. Naturally, it compresses also the live sound, right? Then double thanks for having edited it for us, and also for splitting in individual tracks. I listen to complete albums too, but prefer the tracks splitted, to be able to edit the tags info and ReplayGain values for each one. But lossless formats allow the splitting and rejoining, so that's not a problem for anyone.
Again, thanks for the cool contribution, and... you know... "keep up the good work".

Thank you so much! This has been one of my most listened to movie soundtracks for many years and I'm ecstatic how much more beautiful it sounds now after you fixed the tracks!

Jame Horner's "Once Upon A Forest" CD has the same problem. I hate having to keep adjusting the volume because the soft music in some parts is too low!
