Im changing my tune: I now offer mp3! :D
Thanks to scorepranos Im now able to offer this. And, just like with 'Avatar' (http://forums.ffshrine.org/f92/avatar-deluxe-edition-james-horner-2-cd-176419/#post2712292) I never thought about doing a Deluxe Edition for 'The Ghost and the Darkness'. I didnt like the movie, I didnt like the score. For a long time I regarded it as one of Jerry's failures... certain parts of the music feel so completely out of place that I couldnt help thinking if he composed it for another movie. There certainly is a strong connection to 'Star Trek', judging by quotes of 'ST:TMP' and 'First Contact' (thinking of the Borg-synth). I also thought that the sampled choir sounds tacky and therefore ineffective. But each to his own. Furthermore, it will come out officially in expanded form by Intrada soon, there have been lots of rumours regarding this over the years. Apparently, Intrada has been impeded by rights issues. Lets hope, they sort them out... I guess they will manage to do so, why else would this score have been allowed to be shared? Only if it cannot be used for trading anymore which only happens when itll be succeeded by an official version. All of this makes my Deluxe Edition fairly pointless.
Still, its a Goldsmith and maybe, just like other scores composed by him, 'The Ghost and the Darkness' too would profit from being complete. So I decided to improve the expanded version. There was a lot to be repaired; some tracks were surprisingly noisy, the gain was all wrong, some tracks feature loads of reverb while others lack it. Other tracks contain long pauses inbetween musical pieces... in short: the expanded version wasnt enjoyable.
I got rid of the noise, balanced out the gain, erased the pauses and combined several tracks into longer suites. As you know, my goal always is a coherent listening experience. To achieve that, I erased some parts. For example, Track 11 from the expanded version started with 'Strong Wind' which was nothing else than the 'Opening Titles' tacked to the beginning. Ergo: gone it is, redundancy isnt my style. For 'The Hunt Is On' I used what on the expanded version was called the alternate, it just felt better to me. The version used in the movie now is the alternate instead, note the awful crossfade the moment the sample choir comes in... must be tracked from somewhere else. Talking about crossfades: the horrible one in 'Welcome To Africa & The Bridge' at 1:51 isnt by me. My approach at coherency caused me to compress dynamics, soft parts are louder now and audible. I also changed the stage slightly and EQ'd it differently.
Why am I offering mp3s now? For one, people will do it anyway and by offering them myself, I can control their quality. People dont care about sound so they dont make sure to use the best encoding settings. I however do and I hope that all will profit from it (I actually researched how to create the best mp3... which had the (unintended) effect that I now know several things I didnt know before).
Because of that, there are some distinct differences between the FLAC/mp3 versions:
FLAC: 3 dB louder, brickwall limited, some would call it an example of the 'Loudness War' - to my ears, it still sounds very well regarding how awful the expanded version sounds
MP3: directly derived from my 24/96 HiRes files - if you know how, youre able to extract a 24/48 version (I didnt know that mp3 is capable of HiRes). Burning to CD isnt possible without a resampler, the mp3 version is at 48 kHz which will work well with any portable player or smartphone but wont work with CDs. If you plan on archiving it to CD, take the FLAC version.
Have fun! :)
