Thank you so much for the link, my friend.
I like opera and I love Korngold.
I think that my neighbours in Halkidiki will be delighted.

Could you give me the link, please? Hoping this will convert a Korngold-loving, non-opera fan!
Thank you in advance.

I think it will. I don't mind arias and orchestral pieces lifted from operas... but the whole thing? Nah. But THIS one, oh yes. There are NO tedious recitatives, just songs for voice and chorus and a BIG BIG orchestra with that resplendent Korngold sound. I suggest giving the THIRD ACT a whirl first. just in case. My neighbors have been asking what I have been blaring out the windows lately. Enjoy

Thank you very much!
A gentle reminder for the link please Phideas.
Thanks for sharing your Decca 2012 version Phideas. I don't usually like opera either except for the orchestral parts. The singing here is beautiful though. As I can't understand German I read the English dialogue from a previous Decca recording booklet I found elsewhere.

Gosh.... it took me a moment to intuit your remarks... thinking this opera would be kinky? Then realizing Korngold scored one of the IN HUMAN BONDAGE films... It could be ;-) It remains, so far, the only opera that sets me on fire and is SO Korngold.
Link sent, naturally.

I dont do multilayered comments, my brain is not monty pythonesque, though its a bit surreal at times, so perhaps I did it without conscious thought. I do love his main theme for "of human bondage" though, it reminds me a bit of mahler's adagietto, despite musically not being very alike, but its the mood both put me in. The sea hawk, on the other hand, is very mahler-esque IMO, so yes, a more apt question, would've been if this opera has a certain mahler style about?

I dislike Mahler greatly.... a composer who just went on and on and on and on....

interesting, most people who like korngold tend to like mahler, just like most people who like brahms tend to love herrmann. There are plenty of these little pairs in classical-film music. Perhaps a thread for another day
