Oh yeah you liked Ex Machina's style? :D Well I totally understand that, and it's a matter of preference of course, maybe I just couldn't get over Dunan's redesign. Yeah that's probably it, didn't like her new face xD In that regard her look in Alpha is more acceptable to me. Yes it takes some time to get use to, but eventually she's alright and by the end I've grown to like her. It's a good thing they didn't sexualize her too much (didn't give her big boobs) when it's so common for female characters these days. She's more of a realistic version of what a soldier girl would look like in that world.
The first Appleseed CGI movie has a perfect art style in my eyes. I absolutely love that kind of combination of cel-shaded characters on detailed backgrounds. The opening action scene in a ruined city at night totally blew me away when I first saw so many years ago. It's still wonderful, always will be.
When Appleseed Ex Machina came out in 2007 there was another CGI movie released around the same time - Vexille, and frankly I liked it more then Ex Machina. The art style in particular was very appealing. That was the kind of cel-shading with more realistic looking people that I liked. Wish Ex machina had that style, but it didn't.
The gangster dude, yeah he was like a comic relief for the movie. Though I couldn't understand why is it ok for him to keep coming back. I mean yeah obviously they spent a lot of time on his designs and all those details so... killing him off would be a waste. :P I thought what does it remind me of - his facial moving parts - and then realized, it's Transformers movies.
I forgot to mention the sound design of Alpha. It's pretty good. The sound effects and gunshots, it's well done. The guns give that sense of umph! it's satisfying. Though the standard rifles (that are used a bit too often throughout the movie) sound a little weak. Maybe it's intentional, since it's the future they have suppressed sound. And defense turrets on top of that walking tank at the end, their trra-ta-ta-ta is kinda weak too. Trust me I was right next to a turret when it was fired on a ship, it suppose to sound stronger than that -_- , but then again maybe it's the future so...
As for the blood, yes you're right, and I understand what you mean - the robot blood, the cyborg internal liquids blood. Indeed I stand corrected, there's blood, it's just not always noticeable and guess I wanted to see more of it. But since they're all cyborgs then it's normal not to have too much blood in them. Re-watching the fire fights I see that sometimes they do spill blood, sometimes they don't. Also it was strange when regular bad guys drop like flies from a standard pistol when they should be cyborgs and should be able to take a few bullets to the chest. Again if those guys drop from a pistol then how the heck did Two Horns survive a grenade blast right under his feet? (And how did Iris even get to open a hatch in a tank to through grenade in?) Not even spilling any black blood :x And later we see two bad guys die instantly from a grenade thrown by Briareos from a humvee. Examples like these is what makes a bad writing. It's like the rules of combat can be bent according to a situation, the writer decides who wins and who loses based not on a common sense but on what's convenient for the story at that particular moment. Might seem like I'm nitpicking but it's actually very important to have consistent rules in a fictional world, otherwise suspension of disbelief is broken.
I've enjoyed the movie, really did, just wish it was tighter in some parts.
Here (
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2014-07-16/appleseed-alpha-cg-anime-film-screenshots-unveiled/.76735) it says that the new film is "a reboot that will depict the early days of Deunan and Briareos in search of the legendary city of Olympus." So at least someone in there acknowledges it as a reboot and not a prequel. It's a good thing. I hope there's more to come to Appleseed franchise in this same style.
Oh and I realized that the track at the end is not the one by Skrillex, it's "Depth" by Capsule, the last track on OST. Yeah so it's pretty good, one of the highlights.
"Space" by Capsule is also good. If that's the one you mean was starting to get on your nerves, i can see why it's doing that, it can get repetitive after a while, but I've only listened to it once so far, so I'm good ^_^
"You Make Me" by androp. I don't have much problem with it. The vocals are distorted enough, I think it goes along with the music in the track. It's not bad.
For some reason I like "Tokyo City Underground". It's lighthearted and sunny, the chorus is kinda catchy. A movie could use a track like that for a change.
One track I can't stand is "Castle" by AKLO. It plays during introduction of your favorite character - Two Horns. Very appropriate. But damn... it's so pompous, so stupid =_=
