"Eaters of the Dead" was a lavish and epic film that did so poorly in test screenings that screenwriter Michael Crichton took over as Director where he re-shot and re-edited scenes, created a new ending, and threw out Graeme Revell’s original score. When the finished film was finally released a few years later (1999) it had been re-titled "The 13th Warrior" and had a new score by Jerry Goldsmith, Crichton’s usual collaborator. Despite these changes, the film was still a financial failure and lost over $100 million (although it did win a Best Hair Styling award!)

While music from Goldsmith's score was commercially released (Varese), Revell’s rejected music only appeared on a bootleg rumored to have been released by the composer himself. As you’d expect, opinions vary as to which score is best suited to the movie. Both feature lively action cues and plenty of exotic instruments. Goldsmith incorporated a choir, while Revell added the haunting voice of Lisa Gerrard.

28 tracks in very good stereo sound. No dialog or sfx.
Tau & EAC indicated all tracks on this disc to be lossless.
Disc was ripped to flac using XLD

For the record: There is also a 27-track bootleg out there, but it has the same music as on this 28-track disc. It's one track less because it combined tracks 2&3. Soundtrackcollector also shows a "private release" with 30 tracks. It also combines tracks 2&3 into a single track but also seems to have 3 tracks not on the 27 or 28-track version (tracks 13, 16, 20). It appears to be a personal effort and I have no idea if the information is correct.

Awesome, thanks. Finally an upgrade from the 128 I got on DC++ years ago. I like this film and both scores are great. Thanks again!

Thanks for the share. I was not aware of the film's troubled birth. I was not aware of any rejected score. I enjoyed the film, though 'Eaters of the Dead' was a better title. I shall look forward to hearing this version by Revell.

Being a big Goldsmith and Revell fan, this one really piqued my interest. The Goldsmith score, to my taste, is pretty workman-like, later Goldsmith. It's a good score but I don't think he saw much in the film to capture his interest or characters to hook any kind of music onto. The cd is on my basement also-ran Goldsmith shelf. Nothing wrong with it, just not great Goldsmith.
Revell's, on the other hand is (again just to my taste) an amazing soundtrack. Two very distinct parts, one for the Muslims, one for the Vikings, that makes it seem a bit multiple-personality, but that's the film he was working with. But it has moments of outstanding invention. I hope the story that it was Revell himself who released the bootleg is true but in the end, that doesn't matter, because someone did, and this is a soundtrack that really needs to be heard and appreciated and one that I would not have wanted to miss. (When you listen to a soundtrack as blah and lifeless [really just background noise] as John Carter of Mars, think of what Revell [or Goldsmith] could have done with that blank canvas!)
Just a great soundtrack! Great sounding version, too. Thanks so much for posting this. Hugely appreciated!

Thank you very much, Yepsa! This is amazing.

Talking about Jerry Goldsmith and rejected scores, does anyone here know if Jerry's rejected score for "Babe" is floating around? Supposedly, "Babe" was originally very dark for a family film and they re-edited the movie and changed Jerry's score. Although I like very much the end result (specially the inclusion of Saint Saens) I'd love to hear what The Master wrote for it...

Very interesting and atmospheric. So totally different from Goldsmith's which feels a lot more 'traditional'. Hearing the score makes me want to see this version of the film. Thank you for sharing the lossless. It sounds great too for a bootleg.
