NOTES

Paul Newman's movie of the Tennessee Williams play, about a family
disintegrating in a gloomy, claustrophobic St Louis apartment during
the depression, is uncompromising and at times unbearably poignant.
Henry Mancini�s romanticism and his keen sense of musical humor are
qualities rarely to be found in the world of film music. He is neither
a strictly symphonic writer nor a lightweight tunesmith. Goldsmith fans
and those who love full-blooded orchestral music are not likely to be
that much affected by Mancini�s music, but he is one of the great
melodic writers in cinema.
Τhe music used in the film does fit the period and helps to capture
the spirit of the 1930s in America.
As Henry Mancini has said: "I liked that picture and the music is very
much a part of it. It fits right in. The Glass Menagerie score is all
kinds of solos."

I have to take (small) issue with one aspect of your notes, though. As a Goldsmith fan through and through, I think there's much to appreciate in Mancini in general as well as this particular Mancini score. It just depends on the kind of Goldsmith fan one is. Listening to "Menagerie," I'm reminded of Goldsmith's quieter, gentler, and amazing scores for "Patch of Blue," "Lilies of the Field," "Islands In The Stream."
