I think I may have set my expectations a bit high for this, and they may have also been slightly out of alignment with Morricone's (and Almodovar's) intentions. I've not seen the film for which this score was composed, and a Wikipedia entry described the score as "Herrmannesque." I don't hear any Herrmann in this; rather, it's very much a Morricone score... which is a great thing in and of itself, as I adore Morricone. I just needed to sideline my expectations of a Morricone interpolation of Herrmann.

There is nothing remotely 'Herrmannesque' about this score as you have found out, pure Morricone all the way.
Wikipedia is only to be used as a very rough guide, in most matters.
