Note: hadn't seen this around here in a good while so I figured I'd make it available again. I remember seeing this film upon its initial release in theatres and remember really enjoying it despite all of the critics hating it and highly criticizing Morricone's "dated" approach to the score. Granted, being a kid the only portion of the score I especially remembered upon re-discovering this score was what everyone else who seeks out the score probably remembers: the amazing finale cues. Unfortunately on the original album the finale tracks were wildly out of order, with the track "Where?" being presented WAY too early making the other cues after that seem almost pointless despite not being necessarily bad. I have organized the tracks to the best of my knowledge into the closest chronological sequence based off of a user's comment that I found on the FSM board in regards to this score. It's the best I had to go off of so my apologies in advance if it's slightly off.

Like 1994's Wolf, this score is certainly given a wild variety of wierd touches to it that attempt to make it stand out from Morricone's other output while still keeping the lush romantic and lyrical tones he's become known for. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't within context of the film but one thing is for sure: nothing about this score makes it reach the same nerve-wracking level of frustration that Morricone's utilization of electronic harps in Wolf produced. Overall, when re-sequenced it sounds much better. In my opinion anyway.

Track 3 ("Towards the Unknown") will divide many listeners. I am a bit half and half myself on my opinion in regards to the strange use of the organ for that sequence but after a few listens, it grows on you. It is a rather long, minimal piece and one that may seriously test the listeners' patiences. It's not a "bad" cue, it just feels out of place on this album. Same with the last 3 or so minutes of the track "And Afterwards?" (track 6). It sounds like cheesy downplayed space music you may hear in an old school video game of some sort. Both are nice to have but neither are really needed. I opted to leave them in however for preservation purposes.

Opinions are subjective and most critics are idiots however I feel safe in saying that many may not like this score or give it the proper evaluation it needs but I myself am not one of them. It's definitely grown on me. I hope you enjoy this little blast from the subjectively good ol' past!
