Some of the information about PCM 2.0 laserdisc sound:

"LaserDiscs are the same format as CDs: 16 bit PCM @44.1 KHz"

"Laserdisc releases are much better sound quality than the equivalent DVD releases. ( or so some say ) People say DVD has more compression while the Laserdisc opens up the soundstage and sounds so much better."

"Uncompressed PCM will always sound better than ac3 (Dolby Digital) or DTS. I realize that some later laserdiscs utilized DD or DTS, but most of them were uncompresed PCM."

"Red Book CD is 16bit @ 44.1KHz sample rate. That works out to a bit rate of

I think it's a good idea to explain a little more what this is. Is it the sfx/speech audio stream from the film? Is it the music? I know 440 MBs isn't much for my line (100/100) even though Mega is slow as syrup tonight, but there might be those not so fortunate and there might be those that have a capped amount of download that would appreciate the info.

Thankfully Blu-ray came and rescued us from the AC3 era of DVDs...

I know Laserdiscs are collector's items today, but if you have those classical Universal Signature editions... wow! :)

To tell the truth, regarding the sound on blu ray, it's better than dvd and is a very good format for new motion pictures, but not for old movies.
Most of the classic releases on blu ray and dvd have audio mixes that were different from the theatrical releases. They were completely different mixes done by outside engineers and studios. Laserdisc gives you the true, untouched, original sound mix you would have heard in the theatres at the time and not only the Dolby 2.0 as I am posting here but also in DD and DTS. I don't know if you have Waterworld on blu-ray but if you concentrate, you can hear how this soundtrack is poorly altered. James Newton Howard's score has a waving quality where the audio rises and quiets down most noticable is at the begining of the film when the boat enters Atoll. I am not a fond of releases that somebody tries to improve but ends up ultimately ruining it.
For me, classic movies on blu-ray are only good for the picture quality but not the sound. There are a lot of people making their own releases by adding the sound track from the DTS Disc used in theaters as well as the laserdisc audio versions.

I have been planning to do my own releases, but with THX soundtracks extracted from DVD. I love THX sound! Unfortunately that format didn’t survive for long and there are no Blu-rays with THX sound (Terminator 2 is the only one that I’m aware of). So my idea was to get the NTSC DVD’s of some of my favourite movies that were released with that format, like Die Hard, The Abyss and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (all from 1989); and mix the THX soundtrack with the Blu-ray video.

After reading this thread I browsed online, but it appears that most of the THX laserdiscs have AC3 sound instead of PCM...

adapter2233 do you have any of these movies in laserdisc? BTW how do you rip the soundtracks? Are these a digital or analog rip?

THX is not a format, THX is a standard for sound:

I know that its not really a format, that's just how I sometimes refer to it (wrongly I know). Actually its a certification for image and sound. I'm talking about some editions with the THX certification, usually in the AC3 format.

I do have Terminator 2: Judgment Day, The Abyss, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in PCM Dolby Stereo 2.0 I captured them through SPDIF but they are not bit perfect. It is 16bit 48.000khz. Not in THX but sound rocks ;)
