"The Long Goodbye" (1973) - [FLAC]
ORIGINAL MGM MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK
Limited Edition, 2012

<img src="" alt="Nothing says goodbye like a bullet."

Composed and conducted by John Williams
Lyrics by Johnny Mercer
_________________

For this revision of the Philip Marlowe character, Altman asked Williams to provide a most unusual score: one single theme repeated throughout the film with many variations adapted for various scenes. The tune, one of Williams most inspired from the seventies, is presented as a song (lyrics by Johnny Mercer), with vocals by Jack Sheldon and Clydie King. Williams also presents the theme in different jazz versions (with the Dave Grusin Trio), as a tango, in blues style ("Night Talk), as a warm love theme for trumpet and strings, on sitar (for the hippie party), or in Mexican variations for the last part of the film ("Mariachi, "Guitar Nostalgia). Williams arranged and personally supervised the different versions, in addition to adapting the song as underscore ("The Border, "Marlowe in Mexico, "The Mexican Funeral and "Finale). The lengthy 10-minute "Main Title sequence deserves special mention as an example of how Williams developed his tune.

(Text from Quartet Records (http://www.quartetrecords.com/the-long-goodbye.html))

Quartet Records' release of the complete score to the film along with some rehearsal tracks by Clydie King and others are present here for the first time as a portion of the score and album was released by Varese Sarabande in 2004 as a double dip pairing with Fitzwilly which at the time was thought that the 25 minutes featured were all that was available and now, this special new release features more than double that and with great results. The Long Goodbye is both and amazing film because of a great script, direction and marvellous performances all around. John Williams' part in the film is really bigger than expect as his music really adds to the varying moods in the film and the score based on the song, is one of his more ingenious efforts in his career. A wonderful experience all around and one of the more enjoyable Williams' efforts from the 70's as well as his career. Highly recommended!!

This sold out album was previously shared by Sanico in 2012, and the users who prefer MP3 can download it in her thread. The included 11 MB of descreened (i.e., smoothed) x1400 scans are good enough for most of us, and the not-descreened x2800 parents are in a separate upload, from a scans package by Soundtrackjungle in ed2k.

Yes, not a big surprise, Kobayashi-Maru. As phbart said in another thread, "Johnny Williams is selling out faster than John Williams :)"

// Edit: I think the last album credited to "Johnny" was Heidi, 5 years earlier, but well... "young" Williams sells quite well.

You're welcome, folks.

Believe it or don't, I saw this film over 75 times – on the screen – when it originally opened. I adore this movie. If only the soundtrack contained Mrs. Wade's doorbell. Thanks again!

:O

I'm too shocked with the number to even try to understand, let alone believing. I don't think I've even listened to a song so many times.

The doorbell is not on the disc, but maybe you have good copies of the movie. If you rip that part someday, would you share it with us? It would be a nice extra.

It's a form of madness on my part.
I'm not skilled enough to rip a track from a DVD, but I'm trying to get a little tutorial help from a friend. I do own the DVD (DUH!) and when the knowhow eventually catches up with me, I'll gladly rip and post. :-D

kooke

That's great, Creedmoor; take your time. And don't worry much about quality or format. You could rip the DVD audio and reencode it to mp3, but a short fragment like that will be OK capturing the live output of the soundcard with Audacity, and saving it as .wav or your format or choice.

----

Audacity needs to have the "Stereo Mix" activated to capture the soundcard. This video tutorial that shows how to enable it in Windows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3R2Ki4NL3jk
