This is sort of a followup to my previous thread with the 7.1 mixes of all 3 Jurassic Park end credit suites.

I remember getting an edited version of The Lost World: Jurassic Park complete score a long while back (before the dawn of Blu-Rays) and it sounded awful. It sounded awful because it wasn't lossless, first of all, and also because it was edited using a lossy 5.1 DVD track which was very heavy in surround sound SFX.

I took the liberty of putting together two tracks, that sound MUCH better than the old versions of these tracks from the DVD edit, to demonstrate how different these mixes are from the old DVD mix. Utilizing the DTS-MA 7.1 track from the Blu-Ray, I re-edited these tracks to sound much better AND in lossless quality (as always, edited in a lossless environment)! The 7.1 mix has been completely redone which means it sounds way different than the DVD. The two new side surround channels have mostly music and echoed vocals along with lots of SFX when a big sequence happens.

Luckily, for these pieces, they were relatively untouched by SFX. When the extended cue starts during 'Rescuing Sarah' (which I mixed into the album version so the album sections are upmixed to 24/48), it has rain SFX for about 2.5 seconds. Other than that, NO SFX! Even the 'INGEN Arrival' piece is FREE OF SFX unlike the DVD mix where it was littered with helicopters and vehicles. The jungle instruments are a little echoey because of the way surround channels work, but it sounds much better nonetheless.

Now, lots of pieces still have SFX in them in the 7.1 mix. But, for the most part, they are much less filled with sounds because the sounds are spread out to eight channels instead of six. This film really has an intense mix!

Again, this is just a demonstration of what can be done with the (kind of) new 7.1 DTS mix. I want to get other people interested because I really don't have the time to do a complete score...

Enjoy!

Remarkable! Someone should really take the time and get the full score out of that!

I did. Using the complete conductors score and studying the music note for note against the audio recordings.

"[4m2] Corporate Choppers" does sound very clear, but as you noted is echoey and as commented by others, is incomplete (not your fault at all mind you). It's amazing what the new channels added definition wise! I used them in mine and in some cases, they are soooo clear and replace anything else. But, the real reason my edit doesn't sound this clean is because it incorporates material that isn't used in the films and thus has a bit more sfx to it since it is the complete cue and is available in one place and one place only. It was a bit difficult to get all the elements to match in quality but I I did use the blu-ray rip to layer over it and augment the recordings.

EDIT: Just to show how much isn't used in the film (this image also omits a small loop of music repeated in the film)
~original

With "[8m2] Truck Stop" you did a really good job mixing in the new material. That's one of the harder ones as only about half of the unreleased material is clean. Once you get past a certain point the sfx gets mixed in pretty strongly. I found that in one of the DVD making of features, the sequence plays once with and once without Dinosaurs SFX...and that helped fill in that gap.

As for the choice of releasing it in the different higher qualities... I don't quite understand that trend these days... I mean, it's fine... if you're releasing it at its original quality... but I feel like people see "higher bitrate! better quality!" which may be true in some cases, but CD quality isn't superior to DVD so when you diss DVD, you also are dissing CD... it's not the quality that's the issue, it's the sfx in the tracks and how loud the music is mixed. If the music is very very quiet on DVD, because of the lesser quality, there comes a limit to how far you can boost it while blu ray allows a bit more flexibility. Neither is the quality of the masters, obviously, and in a case where something is sourced from them, highest quality is preferable.

So the REAL reason your tracks sound better is because of the new 7.1 mix which I used in my complete edit and those two new channels are remarkably clean but also lack many instruments so yes it's clean, but no it's not the full complete mix of the music... I chose to err more on the balance of the two than on the side of "completely clean"
