Speaking of heroes and heroines whose origins are from farther east, I would like to share with you all this Asian heroine and this Asian hero, respectively:

A) Mulan, or she who is as mighty, brave, heroic, strong and noble as a warrior, as she is young, fair, lovely, pretty and beautiful as a maiden, and whose story—a story that is as familiar to the peoples of all Asia (including her indigenous China) as the story of Cinderella is familiar to the peoples of Europe and the United States—provided the basis for a hand drawn Disney movie from 16 years ago.

and

B) Samurai Jack, or he who is my kind of guy, a time-displaced warrior swordsman prince of Medieval Japan, my cartoon hero, my favorite cartoon samurai as well as my main Asian man (if only AVATAR’s Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) counts as ‘my main blue man’) and he who wants to go back to his own time and place so he can do the killin’ blow to the evil shape shifting demon wizard Aku, the Master of Masters, Deliverer of Darkness, and Shogun or Sorrow, or whatever Aku’s self-proclaimed titles are…

And so, I am asking you all this:

What are the differences between Mulan and Samurai Jack? And what are the similarities, or comparison and contrast , if you will, between Samurai Jack and Mulan?

That is not what I am looking for, Amanda.

What I'm really asking all of you is:

What are the differences between Mulan and Samurai Jack?

You are going to have to expect a certain amount of irreverence here in the GD section. I may be wrong but I suspect that the funny/inappropriate comments will far outwiegh ny serious discussion. No..err..betrayal. Just not taking it seriously in the name of funny is all.

Ummm...not good with asian racial distinctions and all (Sorry), but Isn't Jack Japanese where Mulan is Chinese. Totally different culterneral referrances, and points to the characters. Jack is a Ronin? Doing what he's doing. While Mulan is a rebel, bucking all traditional values, she has a very different goal set in mind than Jack Does. And, Mulan has a little worm with wings helping her along. And, sings a lot....being Disney and all...:awsm:

Samurai Jack is like The Last Samurai, and Mulan is like Mulan Rise of a Warrior (obviously).
But, yeah those are the similarities to real life movies. In my opinion, of course.

I see.

Samurai Jack was given the boot to the future that is Aku by the Shogun of Sorrow himself. Too bad we will never get a proper ending for Samurai Jack by Genndy Tartakovsky -- possibly for the rest of his life -- but someday, if Genndy may not live to complete Samurai Jack with a big screen movie, if I were to be a filmmaker or animator, then I might work on and hopefully fulfill one of the dreams that Genndy might never attain in his lifetime: the proper ending to Samurai Jack.

Regarding the little worm with wings that helped Mulan along, he is actually a little dragon named Mushu who sprang to life when Mulan's Family's first ancestor says "Mushu, awaken!" before screaming "I LIVE!!!" Also, Mushu was voiced by Eddie Murphy 3 years before he voices a talkative donkey who ends up falling in love with a giant fire-breathing female dragon in DreamWorks' Shrek.

Anyway, even though Mulan talks and sings in Disney's 1998 interpretation of her story, regarding the fact that Mulan is rebellious and revolt against all manner of traditional Chinese values (though, like you've said, Amanda, Mulan's goal is different than Samurai Jack's--but certainly as far as trying to save her dad from death in battle by cross-dressing herself as a Chinese soldier), I would quote from the Emperor of China whom Mulan saves from Shan-Yu and the Mongols (or Huns, as the Disney movie refers to them):

Ive heard a great deal about you, Fa Mulan.

You stole your fathers armor,

ran away from home,

impersonated a soldier,

deceived your commanding officer,

dishonored the Chinese Army,

destroyed my palace,

and you have saved us all.

Anyway, I, for one, did not think a woman likeand such asthe legendary Mulancould be THAT mighty, brave and noble as a warrior when she is THAT young, fair and beautiful as a maiden

Again, I never, ever think a womanespecially one from farther east like the aforementioned Mulancould be as mighty, brave and noble as a warrior as she is young, fair and beautiful as a maiden.

That, again, is just my two cents
