I don't imagine many of you are too familiar with the film, and honestly it was something I'd been a part of on and off for years. I worked on producing the SFX and the score for the film. We all learned a lot producing the film (which if you've never done, never worked on in some capacity, you have no idea the surprises that can arise and the things that just don't work out or happen the way you plan them to).

That being said, I never really got around to releasing any sort of Album for the film. When the 20th Anniversary was approaching for Jurassic Park, we considered looking back at the film to re-release it but no one had the full time to give to the film.

As such, I'd been talking to a few people lately about releasing an album for the film and here are the fruits of that.

The film clocked in close to an hour when I began scoring it. Many scenes got cut down or redone or dropped entirely (there are at least 2 such deleted sequences for the film). I also scored a few of the trailers (except the original teaser).

The technology and programs I had to write and produce the music changed and some cues and tracks I wrote on my initial program, due to time, never got re-recorded in the newer program but I think still hold up well together.

I've created a sort of "album assembly" for the score.

I should say, with the imminent fear of Universal shutting the project done, we all decided to avoid using the established JP themes for fear of infringement.

Certain OBVIOUS reference to the films are made, but we did try to keep it a bit out of the direct line of fire (I suppose to show we tried at least). I DID on this presentation decide to include my TEMP track of the finale using the JP theme. This was the original finale Sketch I wrote after reading the script but was not written against any footage. This is also the first time I've included my "Loneliness" Theme which is the full exploration of the theme heard in "If He Can" during the nighttime beach scene.

I felt it would be a good finale for all the JP fans who would be downloading this to hear it too. The last track is the "Prime Survival" theme.

Maybe one day, if someones interested, I could write up a break down on the score. But I dunno if it would be too interesting to many lol

It was, as the film states in the opening, a learning experience for everyone. And to be honest, as much as I want to do film scores, and despite all the good things that I found doing this one, it's the reason I've NOT done one again. I learned I wasn't to a place where I could do my work the best.

I never released an album of it. It's a different animal than your typical JP although has some of the same elements.

Very nice work GoodMusician, tracks are pleasant to listen to it!

I quite liked the listening of the first six tracks, as I found them and the sequence's diversity appealling musically. Then, the isolated/dangerous scenes follow and the music accompanies the harsh and threatening ambiences of the island. Perhaps half an hour of it may be too long or too alike for a casual listener (while I know that this share has a different motivation), but it takes more than just listening to the tracks to understand what was needed, for example for nicely timed action events, so, ideally, one should have in mind the requirements of the movie scenes when evaluating the music. Of course, that happens also with the works of every other film composer, right? :D

Admittedly, this project was a labour of love -lots of it- by young amateurs, and any comparison with professional movies or the usual material we share here would be missing the point; yet I was surprised by some parts of the soundtrack seeming so "pro". In that regard, possibly my picks of "product" could be "02 Isla Muerta", "05 Tomorrow" and "08 Pterror", which with little tweaks could pass off as part of the official soundtrack of some other movie. Musically, the fist part of "The Boy's Plan" with the piano also caught my attention and I would have welcomed some scene featuring an extended development of it.

There are other parts, like the "alert" fragment at the beginning of track #14, of which I'd have liked more on that style; and of course, #17 made me smile when the Williams' theme began, but that has a prize: you want it to continue all the way!!

Having watched the film in youtube previously makes more obvious the great work on the area of special sound effects (rightly absent from this album) and I'd suggest anybody curious about the project to check out the youtube link, and even have the video playing minimized for a while, just allowing the sound to evoke visuals. Framed in the audio of those scenes, the music has a richer effect, and along with the SFX it can suggest very powerful images.

I've found all this very interesting and educational, so thank you for sharing it. And my respect and congratulations to everyone else involved in this big and long-lasting beast.

Probably one of the best reviews I've had (and I don't mean in the sense that it was so kind, but that it was so thorough)!

Whats interesting is track 2 was edited using a few different tracks and I redid it for this release so it's slightly different than the version I posted on youtube, track 5 I made for this release specifically, and track 8 is one of my favourites too.

As for the "Alert" piece at the beginning of 14 I debated a while if I should cut it off or not but I left it anyway so I'm glad you liked it lol. I didn't, stylistically, do a whole lot of "Stalling" or audio mimicry of movement, and tried to stay more in the realm of ambiance and visceral tones. Perhaps next time heh. I think the only other time I did something like that would have been in the original version of when the main boy is running away from the Dilo's and the raptor that shows up only to run into a dilo eating a raptor. I did something there but I chose the 2nd version of that cue for the film and such.

In more wider strokes, my intent was to create a musical disparage between the world the boys came from and the world they end up in. England up until the empty beach really is more melodic. Once the animals present themselves, the score takes a shift away from melodies into more visceral sounds and ambiance. There are "themes" but they're usually in quieter moments when they boys are alone.

The piano trades off it's place to the gamalan once the boys arrive at the island too. What would have been the piano parts become the Gamalan once they're on the island. The piano comes back at the end as they leave the island.

We had thought about re-releasing the film around the 20th and I asked about re-scoring it to have more William's themes but none of us had the full time to commit to it so it wasn't finished. In that time I'd rescored the opening (which is the new track 1), I made a new source cue for the Costa Rican' restaurant, and refined the audio mix (which was also my job on the film so again, thank you for your kind comments on that mix).

I made the original sound mix in 5.1 but the downmix into stereo for youtube degraded it somewhat, so if it sounds good in that, then i'm glad heh

And honestly, as much as I've learned studying Williams scores, working on this really helped me learn exactly how it all comes together so I found it very interesting and educational too heh
