In this 2005 film, Nicholas Cage plays TV weather man David Spritz whose career is going well but whose personal life as a husband and dad is a mess. His efforts to get his life together never work out the way he wants, to which his estranged father reminds him, "Easy doesn't enter into grown-up life." There's also alcoholism and a fatal disease, which prompts Spritz to take up archery as a way to calm his nerves (gee, my life doesn't seem so bad after all).
For this rather downbeat story, composer Zimmer provided an atypical score that is spare and melancholy, but still kind of pretty in its minimalism. There are some elements of reggae for a cooler vibe. David Baerwald, Heitor Pereira and David Levine have been credited as co-composers, and the film's director, Gore Verbinski, can be heard playing the electric guitar.
Although no commercial soundtrack was ever released, an 8-track For Your Consideration promo was distributed and some years ago I obtained a copy (lossless). The seller threw in a copy of a 41-track version ("Complete Score"), with all tracks being lossy. I also bought a copy of the 48-track "Original Motion Picture Score" which was released on First Born Records (bootleg), and it's a mix of both lossless and lossy.
ACADEMY PROMO: 8 tracks totaling about 17 minutes.
Great stereo sound. No dialog or sfx.
Tau and EAC indicated all tracks in the disc to be lossless.
All 8 tracks appear on the 41-track version (but lossy) and also on the 48-track version in lossless.
For those interested, a track comparison with the FYC Promo is in spoiler #1.
COMPLETE SCORE (lossy): 41 tracks totaling about 63 minutes of music.
Great stereo sound. No dialog or sfx.
The artwork has an error: track 17 ("My Father") shows a time of 0:19, when it is actually 1:34.
Tau and EAC indicated all tracks on this disc to be lossy, with a cut-off @ about 17,000 kHz (256 kbps).
It's generally agreed that these 41 tracks also appear on the 48-track version (though in different configurations), so if you aren't interested in the 10 additional tracks on the 48-track version (more info below), you might just as well stick with this 41-track version.
ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SCORE (lossless & lossy): 48 tracks totaling about 88 minutes of music.
Great stereo sound. No dialog or sfx.
Released on First Born Records (bootleg, not a commercial release)
This version is a mix. Most of the tracks are lossy, with the exception of the 8 tracks lifted from the FYC Academy Promo and these tracks: 1,6,30,39,41,45,47 and 48. There are 10 tracks not found on the 41-track version, but it's unclear if they were written for the film, or lifted from somewhere else. The vocals (tracks 46 & 47) are definitely not original. Please see message #6 and #14 below for more discussion.

TRACK COMPARISON
8-TRACK FYC ACADEMY PROMO:
All 8 tracks of the FYC Promo are found on the 41 & 48-track versions too. They are lossless on the 48-track version, but lossy on the 41-track version (all tracks are). The 41-track version uses the same titles as the 8-track FYC Promo, so it's easy to determine which those 8 are. On the 48-track version, the 8 tracks of the FYC Promo were given different titles, but here's how they correspond...
1) Pling Pong = same as tracks 18/20 combined
2) Monochrome = same as track 5
3) You Should Carry More Money = same as track 25
4) Visions of Spongebob = same as track 26
5) Living Funeral = same as track 32
6) Hot Apple Pie = same as track 33
7) Melanchromy = same as track 34
8) Who Knows? = same as track 42
48-TRACK ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SCORE:
The following 10 tracks only appear here.
1) Paramount Logo (lossless)
3) Hello America Theme (lossy)
6) Mom's Tune (lossless)
30) Cab Ride (lossless)
39) Gold Coast Mall Muzak (lossless)
41) Reflections (lossless)
45) More Ranges, Rides & Reflections (Alt) (lossless)
46) Like a Rock (vocal by Bob Seger) (lossy)
47) The Passenger (vocal by Iggy Pop) (lossless)
48) Encore (lossless)
Although the above music did appear in the film, it's unclear if they were written for the film or were lifted from somewhere else. The vocals on tracks 46 & 47 were definitely not written for the film. Please see message #6 and #14 below for more discussion about the other 8 tracks.
